The Chief Operational Risk Officer has primary second line-of-defense responsibility for all operational risk activities.

This role will be responsible for identifying, measuring, controlling and monitoring the institution’s operational risk for all areas, providing an early warning system of key risk indicators.

As Chief Operational Risk Officer and Risk Theme owner, responsibilities will include reporting to the Board of Directors of Northern Trust as well as the most senior risk body of the company, the Global Enterprise Risk Committee. Additionally, this position is responsible for understanding and providing oversight and challenge on all risks to the company, as part of the Risk Enterprise Leadership Team.


Duties Include:
  • Responsible for recommending the Company’s risk appetite for relevant risk inventory items related to operational risk via the appropriate risk oversight bodies
  • Directs staff in establishing operational risk management procedures and standards; developing operational risk management analysis reports.
  • Position will own the risk Themes related to operational risk, including the Operational Resiliency & Recovery Risk Theme and the Operational Execution, Data Integrity & Reporting Risk Theme.
  • Responsible for the design, and to ensure implementation, of a variety of operational risk frameworks including RCSA, 3rd Party Risk Management and Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery.
  • Develops approval procedures and guidelines on operational risk limits by type of product and/or process/control and in establishing management and administrative procedures to ensure adherence to policies.
  • Acts as the firm’s senior second line-of-defense liaison with external regulatory or legal bodies on operational risk management issues.
  • Responsible for managing multiple units or functions through the direct management of a group of managers.
  • Develops, implements and communicates an overall strategy to meet both the Business Unit's and Institution’s strategic plan. Directs the activities of those areas toward accomplishing those objectives.
  • Assumes accountability for financial and staffing resources, including developing and managing capital and expense budgets, liaising cross-function to improve efficiency, effectiveness and productivity.
  • Assumes full accountability for the performance and profitability of the area as compared to the plan.
  • May be responsible for managing multiple functions, providing leadership and guidance to subordinate managers.

Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of business strategy development is necessary to provide long term planning and to manage the profitability/performance of a major business segment.
  • Leadership and organizational skills are required to direct the activities for the multiple units. In-dept knowledge and understanding of risk management is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required. Highly flexible and adaptable to change. Technical skills / systems knowledge (e.g. Microsoft, Peoplesoft) is required
  • Seasoned leader with extensive business experience, and broad functional expertise, with focus on proactive strategic leadership
