The Headlines:
In the role of Chief Legal Officer and Government Affairs Officer (CLO) working in Chicago, Illinois you will lead the Legal function for the organization. The CLO is a key strategic member within the executive leadership team and will be responsible for adding direct value to the business through strategic planning and visioning from a legal perspective. Reporting to the CEO, the CLO will be responsible for leading the legal, government affairs, corporate governance, security, ethics and compliance, enterprise risk management, IP, data privacy, water resources, real estate and facilities functions for the company and maintaining best practices in those areas.

The CLO is a strategic thought leader, anticipating opportunities as well as risks, and can make decisions and accommodate change in both an independent and collaborative manner. The CLO owns the organization’s point of view on legal positions and outlook that affect strategic (LRP) and annual plans (AOP).

The Responsibilities:
  • Leads and inspires a team of talented colleagues, and supports their growth and development through career discussions and consistent one on one conversations
  • Acts as the chief advisor to the CEO and Board of Directors on legal and corporate governance issues
  • Acts as the main legal counsel for the company and its executive leadership team, guiding group decisions and ensuring that legal topics and emerging risks are surfaced and addressed appropriately and effectively
  • Oversees, investigates, and ensures regulatory compliance and provides guidance and oversight on material legal issues globally
  • Ensures protection of, and strategic management of, the company’s global intellectual property portfolio
  • Provides counsel on issues facing publicly traded companies—e.g., SEC & NYSE reporting requirements, Reg FD and insider trading compliance, etc.
  • Ensures limitation of contractual risk, by overseeing all major contracts considered by the business to protect Molson Coors’ rights and support negotiations on material matters as required
  • Designs and manages a legal organization that maximizes legal services as well as economies of scale, efficiencies, and capabilities
  • Manages interactions with third-party legal support on material matters
  • Supports strategic relationships with government/regulators, and oversees product approvals
  • Strategically represents the company’s interest in industry forums and associations, proactively supporting to shape the relevant agenda
  • Anticipates external reactions and trends regarding Molson Coors’ positioning, and reacts to public and government inquiries as appropriate
  • Oversees global capabilities across the company where required (e.g., ethics & compliance, enterprise risk management)

Qualifications:

  • You have a law degree and are a current practicing lawyer
  • You have at least 15 years of progressive experience in a law firm or in an in-house counsel capacity for a large public company
  • You have a strong legal / commercial background preferably within a leading CPG company
  • You are experienced working in highly regulated industries
  • You have strong leadership experience directing legal teams for a US or global organization
  • You have excellent legal, business and financial acumen in dealing with suppliers, distributors, third party providers
  • You are an expert problem solver with great judgment
  • You have a keen understanding of government affairs
  • You are a strategic thought leader, with credibility to advise senior leadership
  • You have the capability to quickly identify risks and formulate and execute mitigation plans
  • You can navigate complex business environments with multiple laws and stakeholders
