Position Overview

The Chief Human Resource Officer (CHRO) is responsible for developing and executing human resource strategy in support of the organization's overall business plan and strategic direction, specifically in the areas of talent management, organizational and performance management, learning and development, and benefits and compensation.

While reporting directly to the CEO, the CHRO provides strategic leadership by articulating HR needs and plans to the executive management team and stakeholders.


Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Establish and implement HR efforts that effectively communicate and support the company's mission and strategic vision.
  • Develop HR plans and strategies to support the achievement of the overall business operations objectives.
  • Function as a strategic business advisor to the executive/senior management of each business unit or specialty group regarding key organizational and management issues.
  • Work with the company's executive management team to establish a sound management succession plan that corresponds to the strategy and objectives of the company.
  • Develop comprehensive strategic recruiting and retention plans to meet the human capital needs of strategic goals.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive compensation and benefits plans that are competitive and cost-effective.
  • Provide overall leadership and guidance to the HR function by overseeing talent acquisition, Learning & Talent Development, succession planning, retention, leadership development, compensation, and benefits.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experiences:

  • A BS/BA degree from an accredited college/university; MBA or MA/MS in human resources or related field preferred.
  • A minimum of 12-15 years of progressive experience in Human Resources, with 7+ or more years in a senior leadership role in human resources.
  • SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) or SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) certification is preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of functional HR disciplines and analytical skills are necessary to analyze various Human Resources and management issues, recommend and implement Human Resources policy and procedure changes, develop and administer the departmental budget, and interpret employment relations laws and regulations.
  • Proven skills to influence, negotiate and persuade to reach cooperative exchange and positive outcomes with advanced skill in presenting findings, conclusions, alternatives, and information clearly and concisely.
  • Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrated project management and organization skills to handle multiple projects (small and large) with conflicting priorities and deliver projects on time with excellence.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a customer-service focus and a proven appetite for uncovering talent.
  • Have demonstrated technical proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), Learning Management Systems (LMS), and other HRIS systems.


Work Conditions & Physical Demands

  • Ability to work out of the premier office tower from New York to Chicago at Key Tower in downtown Cleveland.
  • Able to work independently or as a team member to assist HR, employees, and managers with special projects requiring the use of the HRIS systems.
  • Strong collaboration skills – works well across functional areas—excellent relationship-building skills; able to collaborate with various levels of the organization.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear, and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Expected Hours of Work & Travel

  • Days and work hours are generally Monday through Friday but may require evening and/or weekend shifts.
  • Frequent regional travel will be required, as necessary.
