Aligned with the strategic priorities of the Acero Schools, the Chief Education Officer serves as the academic visionary of the network. This Chief leads Acero’s Department of Scholar Achievement (DoSA) and school principals enabling scholars to achieve academic excellence in school environments that honor, uplift, and celebrate their abilities. This primary academic senior leader is responsible for developing and implementing near- and long-term academic priorities that are data-informed, contemporaneous with leading-edge educational practices and aligned with Acero’s core values and stance as an anti-racist network. This dynamic individual defines, inspires and communicates the transformative aspects of Acero’s academic portfolio through best-in-class programming that is nimble and culturally responsive. This senior leader works cross-collaboratively across the organization facilitating Acero’s Culture of Care for scholars, colleagues and the communities we serve. The Chief Education Officer reports directly to the President and Chief Executive Officer.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead the Department of Scholar Success (DoSA) to implement colleague professional development, robust academic programming and deft staffing design, programmatic and staff evaluation practices and curricular implementation; serve as the final approval of campus master schedules.
  • Develop, supervise, evaluate and support the continuous improvement of school principals and DoSA staff members.
  • Design and monitor mentoring and coaching resources and protocols that provide differentiated support for school leadership.
  • Coach and mentor school leaders and DoSA staff members in ways that drive scholar academic gain and social and emotional health and develop an even stronger networks and individual school communities.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Financial Officer to facilitate, develop and manage DoSAdepartmental and school-based budgets.
  • Drive creative change at all levels of the organization. Lead campuses in program development, goals and objectives.
  • Champion rigorous continuous improvement initiatives and prioritize proactive change management.
  • Drive the alignment and implementation of school-based improvement plans with the network’s strategic plan.
  • Develop plans, projections and progress benchmarks for transformative educational initiatives.
  • Expedite clear and responsive communication, understanding and action concerning school-level opportunities and challenges, improving scholar achievement and the colleague experience.
  • Advance and implement strategic and operational initiatives, built on data, to evaluate and track improvement.
  • Shepherd the observation of instructional programming and the evaluations of scholar academic progress while ensuring each Acero school maintains satisfactory academic progress in the areas of attendance, grades and scholar matriculation and graduation.
  • Supervisethe Acero Athletics Department and co-curricular programs enriching scholar and school-community experience and social-emotional well-being.
  • In collaboration with the Chief Legal Officer, ensure compliance with all K-12 related federal, state and local laws, regulations and guidelines. Establish essential organizational academic policies and procedures and ensure the fidelity of policy implementation.
  • Facilitate the provision of daily incident reports to the Chief Legal Officer on all significant school matters.
  • Collaborate with network Chiefs on professional development training for DoSA and school leaders.
  • Remain abreast of contemporary issues, trends and developments in education; align programmatic areas of focus accordingly.
  • In collaboration with all other senior leadership team members, assess campus operations and services resulting in vigorous school offerings and scholar, colleague, parent and caregiver experiences.
  • Establish, communicate and assess school academic operational priorities and performance standards for school leadership, educators, related support staff and office coordinator professionals.
  • Lead quality assurance reviews to address areas for growth, improvement and celebration.
  • In collaboration with the Chief Strategy & External Affairs Officer, evaluate scholar attrition and retention; collaborate to improve or transform practices accordingly.
  • Implement strong personnel management practices, demonstrate a strong understanding of collective bargaining agreement (CBA) processes and issues; serve as the lead academic expert during CBA or other union negotiation processes including the development of memorandums of understanding or during grievance hearings.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Operating Officer to facilitate IT & Facilities’ strategic priorities.
  • Educate and inform Acero’s governance of contemporary educational practices and Acero’s proactive or responsive initiatives.
  • Serve as a non-voting member of the Acero Board of Directors Academic Committee.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Strategy & External Affairs Officer to create seamless and rigorous communication channels between central support office staff and school administrators.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Strategy & External Affairs Officer to further grow scholar and family offerings including, but not limited to, development and fundraising efforts, grant writing initiatives, network and school ambassadorship opportunities and expanding Acero’s scholarship and parent/caregiver supports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Education or related field (required), Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Education or closely related field (required), obtained or working towards Superintendent endorsement/certificate.
  • Experience in teaching and school administration for a minimum of ten years (required).
  • Ability to lead change and lead people.
  • Ability to meet network goals with a focus on results.
  • An ongoing customer focus.
  • Possess complete integrity and a high sense of personal and professional ethics.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to anticipate problems and utilize data analysis to create innovative solutions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the CEO, executive leadership team, Principals, and other staff.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States(required).
  • Residency in Chicago is not required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

The nature of the work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files, and an ability to communicate and exchange information. Physical demands include the ability to stand, bend, reach high and low, stoop, and walk around the classroom 60% of the day. In addition, candidates must be able to lift and/or push and pull 15 to 20 lbs. for short periods of time, and walk up and down stairs several times a day.

Majority of work is performed in a general office environment. Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours required to perform job duties. Also requires participation and attendance at organization-sponsored events and meetings.
