The City of Phoenix Water Services Department, one of the nation’s largest potable water utilities, treats and delivers safe, reliable drinking water to 1.5 million customers across approximately 540 square miles. Phoenix Water Services also manages the sewer collection system and treats wastewater for 2.5 million residents in metropolitan Phoenix.

The Water Services Department is seeking to recruit individuals to conduct analytical tests, interpret results, write comprehensive analytical reports and documents, and maintain compliance with policies and procedures as required under state and federal regulations in order to maintain analytical quality, conduct routine analysis and special chemical and microbiological studies of raw and treated drinking water, wastewater, and solid wastes. Specialty assignments based on position will require different sets of knowledge of methods and procedures.

General job duties include:

  • Compliance testing in support of various regulatory programs and special studies for the City of Phoenix Water Services Department.
  • The use of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for retrieving, tracking, and entering analytical data.
  • Analysis of water and wastewater samples for compliance and process control requirements using approved Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Compliance with safety requirements in the course of routine analysis.
  • Use of Quality Assurance Plan (QAP) in the course of routine analysis.
  • Archival of analytical data per SOPs and QAP requirements.
  • Develop and update methods and procedures used in the examination of environmental samples.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel Applications
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Knowledge of the following:
    • Water treatment plant operation and/or process control principles.
    • Laboratory quality system and related policies and procedures.
    • State, Federal, and NELAP regulations.

SALARY


$22.92 (minimum) - $34.78 (maximum) hourly / $47,673.60 - $72,342.40 annually.

Pension Information

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years of professional level experience in chemical and microbiological analyses in the public health or chemical laboratory field.
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, microbiology, or a related field.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Laboratory experience in an environmental setting.
  • Experience with/in the following:
    • Environmental Protection Agency, Standard Methods, and/or Arizona Department of Health Services policies and procedures for laboratory analysis.
    • Analytical testing of Inorganic methods such as BOD, COD, TSS/TDS, Cyanide, Ammonia, TKN, TOC, Alkalinity, Sulfide, and Mercury in drinking water and/or wastewater.
    • ICP and ICP/MS instrumentation for metals analysis in drinking water and wastewater.
    • Analytical testing using Ion Chromatography for anion contaminants.
    • Maintaining and troubleshooting analytical instruments.
    • Training other analysts on various drinking water and wastewater analytical methods.
    • Writing and revising Standard Operating Procedures for various analytical methods.
    • Method development of analytical methods for drinking water and wastewater.
    • Using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) or other data applications.
