Saint John's Abbey Guesthouse invites applications for the full-time benefit eligible position of Chef.

Saint John's Abbey Guesthouse is located on the Saint John's University campus in central Minnesota on 3,000 acres of managed woodland and lakes.

Under the administrative supervision of the Manager of Dining Operations - Abbey Guesthouse, this position is a part of the Abbey Guesthouse service staff and provides hospitality service to the guests who stay in the Saint John’s Abbey Guesthouse. The primary functions of this position are: a.) to prepare high quality food and provide for guest service at the continental breakfast, lunch and dinner meals served at the Abbey Guesthouse; b.) to clean dining facilities; c.) to provide assistance with setting up and organizing the meeting room spaces in the building for special events.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provides food and beverage service in the Abbey Guesthouse. Prepares foods that are nutritious and healthy.

2. Responsible for keeping the guesthouse dining areas supplied with quality food products, tend food stations, and neatly maintain the service work areas. Set up service areas before each meal and clean service areas after the meal is served.

3. Day-to-day contact with guests and provides efficient and hospitable service to all guests staying at the Guesthouse.

4. Clean dining areas, related food services areas, and wash cooking utensils.

5. During down times, may be asked to wash dishes.

6. Providing food/beverage service for day and/or special meetings. Set up, clean and take down of meeting rooms. Responsible to provide guests with service at the time the event happens.

7. Directs dishwasher and manages shift.

8. Attends kitchen staff meetings when scheduled.

9. Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school education with previous service/catering experience.
  • Ability to communicate in a friendly manner.
  • Training in Food Service Safety and certified by the State of Minnesota.
  • Capable of physical activity including lifting, walking and standing.
  • Available to work shifts as requested. This includes evening and weekend assignments.
  • Prior to final selection, candidates may be required to have a physical examination.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Successfully pass a criminal background check.

ADDITIONAL REQUISITES:

  • Ability to interact with the community of St. John's as an integral part of the staff and faculty.
  • Project a positive image of service which represents the unit to which assigned.
  • Ability to acquire an understanding of the character and mission of St. John's.
  • A willingness to maintain a high level of competence. Discreet judgment and confidentiality are expected at this level of responsibility.

ADDITIONAL DEPARTMENTAL REQUISITES:

HOURS: Variable 32 hours per week; typically, breakfast and lunch time or supper time periods. Normal hours of operation are Sunday through Saturday: between 6 AM and 8 PM.
