Duties:

  • Provides timely and accurate pharmaceutical and technical care, including procurement, storage, preparation, and distribution of medications and IV solutions, under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist.
  • This is performed in accordance with national and state standards, such as TJC and BOP.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, generic and trade drug names, pharmaceutical calculations and regulatory laws.
  • Knowledge and understanding of medication storage and security, with enhanced awareness of controlled substances regulations and laws.
  • Must be a graduate of an accredited pharmacy technician program as defined by CA State Law.
  • Must hold a valid license in the state of CA as a pharmacy technician. National Board certification is desirable. One year experience in a hospital in-patient pharmacy.
  • Able to perform functions related to compounding, packaging, labeling of medication products from bulk to unit dose.
  • Perform sterile parenteral preparation procedures using proper aseptic technique.
  • Must be able to work in high stress environment, and achieve work results in established timeframe.
  • Critical and analytical thinking is determined by evaluating degree of accuracy with which cassettes are filled, stat orders are filled, checked by the pharmacist, and delivered to the patient.
  • Delivers medications to the nursing units on regularly scheduled rounds and prospectively reviews medications in the med rooms and assess for returns to pharmacy if patient has been discharged, or if duplicate orders have been sent.
  • Technical skills are measured by: preparation of floor stock billing; preparation of IV piggybacks, and IV solutions aseptically, per physician order, performing necessary pharmaceutical calculations as needed; preparation of chemotherapy IV solutions and epidural narcotic infusions.
  • Replenishes and distributes Crash Cart drug modules, Urgency Trays, Heart Lung Cart. Operates and cleans unit-dose packaging machine (Euclid).
  • Communication oral and written assessed as the pharmacy technician participates in orientation and training of new staff, and plays an active role in departmental problem-solving groups.
  • Does not allow the phone to ring more than 3 times before answering; it the pharmacist in on another line, must answer as quickly as possible.
  • Leadership and professional accountability are evaluated by participation in the accreditation survey process, active participation in the orientation and teaching of new pharmacy technicians as well as pharmacy interns.
  • Enthusiasm in attending such Pharmacy conferences as ASHP Mid-Year, or Pharmacy conferences targeting technicians.
  • Compliance with and teaching of the regulatory Laws for Pharmacy practice.
  • Maintains a professional appearance and demeanor while at work.
  • Will accept an assignment by the pharmacist or other senior staff member even if it is not one of the job duties of the shift currently being worked.
  • Quality and safety are evaluated by using the following parameters: appropriate packaging and labeling of repackaged products; accurately takes inventory and replaces stock in the IV clean room and unit dose with no more than six (6) documented errors annually; accurately follows compounding instructions designated in the compounding book and logs in all information completely to assure QA follow up; assures that all items that are running low in the bins are either are-stocked or marked down on the log for ordering by pharmacy buyer.
  • Accountability measured by meeting mandatory annual requirements, including but not limited to, TB Testing, HIPPA and Compliance exams, age-specific departmental competency exams Accountability to be assessed by meeting departmental goals

Skills:
