The medical assistant is a member of the interdisciplinary medical team of the health center. This position is responsible for intake work with patients as they enter the clinical care area according to approved clinical/support services protocols, policies, and procedures. The medial assistant is a liaison between the front desk staff, and the medical providers in the provision of care.

The following Policy and Procedure Manuals (PPMs) will guide the assigned duties and tasks of the MA - Standing Delegate Orders, Laboratory, Immunizations, and Client Support Services. The MA is expected to be an active participant in the Performance Improvement (PI) process/activities, and will periodically be assigned PI Audit related responsibilities.

II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned.

A. General: – Assures the following:

1. Checking schedules and organizing patient flow and participates in morning huddles with interdisciplinary medical team.

2. Receives patient with courtesy; verifies correct patient using two (2) patient identifiers and accompanies to exam/procedure room;

3. Assists patients as needed with walking, collecting specimens, preparing for exams, etc.;

4. Obtains vitals, patient history, health risks assessment, general dental screening reason for seeking care and accurately documents on appropriate E.H.R. screen;

5. Assists providers with examinations and procedures according to established protocols;

6. Administers general medications, treatments and dressing as directed by providers;

7. Administers general preventive screening tests and records results on appropriate E.H.R. screen;

8. Assist patients with referrals per provider request;

9. Performs limited in‑house laboratory procedures were approved;

10. Participate in the development of the patient care plan with other team members as authorized.

11. Provides information, education, and counseling on health problems as appropriate per provider request, knowledge, and training.

12. Document select services on medical encounter form, other special service form requirements, and reviews overall entries for completion.

13. Enters services rendered and necessary documentation into appropriate page on the E.H.R

14. Observes and lists exam room supplies needed and makes appropriate request to re-supply.

15. Check and calibrate equipment where assigned, and reports any malfunctioning equipment to supervisor.

16. Assist as backup in all nursing areas where appropriately trained and within certification requirements

III. OTHER RESPONSIBILITY ASSIGNED INCLUDE:

1. Maintains area in sanitized, neat and orderly manner.

2. May be assigned lead for ordering and maintaining medical, lab, pharmacy or other necessary inventory.

3. Involvement in on going PI Team activity.

4. Works cooperatively with staff.

5. Assisting with PI Audits.

6. Adhere to all PI policies, protocols and procedures such as Safety, Care of Equipment, Incidence Reporting, etc.

7. Maintaining Confidentiality of all client/patient information whether verbal, hard paper copy, and/or computer based.

8. Maintaining Confidentiality of assigned computer system Password.

9. Ensure that all computer data is accurately inputted.

10. Ensure that assigned service responsibilities for patient processing are efficient and timely so as to minimize waiting time for services.

11. Represents the AHC, and all program services in a positive and professional manner through all patient interactions.

12. May require participation in providing off-sight services, example includes health fairs and screening programs, or rotation to a satellite clinic.

13. Other duties as assigned.

IV. QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

Graduate of a credentialed Medical Assistant Licensed Program.

Minimum of three months experience in a medical environment, preferably in an AHC type environment.

Ability to perform with high level of proficiency.

Computer literacy and basic data entry skills required.

Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, REGISTRATIONS

Must be currently certified by an approved vocational medical assistant program.

Current CPR

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyzes, and interprets general nursing material, protocols and office procedures.

Ability to write simple correspondence.

Ability to organize and carry out basic nursing related and documentation tasks.

Ability to present information in one-on-one and small group situations to patients, visitors, and employees of the organization.

CLIENT AND CROSS-CULTURAL SUPPORT SKILLS

1. Awareness and experience with non-profit environment particularly in service to socio-economic and medically undeserved populations.

2. Sensitivity to and willingness to work and learn cultural and language differences/diversity in service delivery.

V. ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Work is performed in a medical office environment;

Involves frequent face to face interaction and/or telephone contact with patients.

Contact involves dealing with sick people.

Work may be stressful at times.

Interaction with others is constant and interruptive.

VI. PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required;

To sit, talk or listen.

Requires eye-hand coordination and hand/finger dexterity for telephone, calculator and computer keyboard and/or other office equipment.

Stooping and bending to file and gather supplies

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Pay: $13.50 - $18.00 per hour
