Under the general supervision of a radiologist and/or appropriate physician, operates computerized tomography (CT) scanner to obtain images for use by physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of pathologies. Operates CT scanners and peripheral equipment, prepares scan room, supplies, and medications. Prepare and enter written documentation as required by the department. This individual has direct patient contact with the following age groups: Infant; Pediatric; Adolescent; Adult and Geriatric;

Responsibilities:

  • Performs a variety of technical procedures that require independent judgment and ingenuity Utilizes proper body mechanics when:
  • Moving, positioning and transferring patients without assistance or with assistance when needed for patient safety
  • Moving equipment/supplies that is necessary to perform essential functions
  • Checks patient identification band before transporting and prior to procedure in order to ensure testing is performed on correct patient.
  • Assists physicians in performance of examinations.
  • Demonstrates competence in operating ionizing radiation producing CT equipment minimizing radiation to patient, staff, self, while maximizing image quality.
  • Verifies pt. symptoms with scanning protocols
  • Obtains patient history, including clinical documentation, prior to performing procedure. Documents all relevant information on patient record and department files.
  • Explains procedure to patient and assists patient throughout procedure.
  • Prepares contrast media for administration.
  • Shields patients whenever and wherever possible.
  • Inquires of all female patients of child bearing age as to their LMP and/or possible pregnancy. Documents same on requisition.
  • Conforms to policies governing patient abuse, patient safety, confidentiality and advanced directives.
  • Will be required to work with ionizing radiation producing equipment, computers, laser printers, contrast agents, and other medical equipment and communication devices.
  • Practices sterile techniques as required and observes infection control procedures.
  • Completes all mandatory unit, educational and hospital requirements.
  • Adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records in radiology system.
  • Observes patient and equipment during procedure and documents and reports unusual occurrences and equipment malfunctions promptly.
  • Maintains room stock and emergency medication.
  • Checks expiration dates on both contrast media and medications prior to use.
  • Cleans and disinfects CT equipment and scan rooms.
  • Maintains orderliness and cleanliness

Requirements:

Education:

  • High School graduation or equivalent required. Graduate from a Radiologic Technology program accredited by N.Y.S. Dept. of Health, with all associated clinical hours, Maintains the recommended CME by the ARRT

Licensure/Certification:

  • Must have certifications from The American Registry of Radiologic Technology, one being R.T.(R). Advanced CT certification preferred.
  • Must be licensed by the state of New York. Certified to inject and start IV for contrast injections, and maintain BLS certification. Maintains the recommended CME by the ARRT.
