Common Ground Café is a nonprofit business with the objective to serve tasty food and specialty drinks while providing a training ground to prepare individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities for the workforce. Participants complete a paid internship program to learn job skills that will help them attain competitive, gainful employment in the community.

The Cafe Coordinator/Job Coach position will provide supervision and leadership to our interns and front of house operations of the café. You will also exhibit patience and model professionalism for the interns. Our café is located in Veterans Plaza (near the Public Library) and is a subsidiary of Progressive Directions, Inc.

Cafe Coordinator/Job Coach Job Summary:

The Café Coordinator/Job Coach’s basic duty is to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Front of House for Common Ground Café. This includes providing support and job skills training to individuals with developmental disabilities, enabling them to gain competitive employment. Café Coordinator/Job Coach is responsible for knowing and overseeing that all policies and procedures for Progressive Directions, Inc. are followed within the Café. Is a Key Holder for Café. Is punctual and maintains regular and consistent attendance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: in addition to other duties as assigned.

Front of House

1. Oversee the basic operations and daily cash flows for the Café.

2. Greets customers and ensures excellent customer service standards are established and maintained.

3. Ensure high standard of cleanliness and order within café. Ensure Café is compliant with TN state laws and regulations relating to food storage, facility sanitation standards, and safety for unannounced health inspections occurring every six months to a year by the health department.

4. Oversee to-go and dine-in orders, telephone calls, and handling of customer complaints.

5. Perform cashier functions to include taking customer orders, operating cash register, collecting cash and credit card payments, making change accurately and efficiently, issuing receipts to customers, maintaining cash control over register drawer, and verifying amounts are correct.

6. Knowledgeable of Café menu. Adjust orders as needed to accommodate customers with specific diet and health concerns.

7. Ensure adequate inventory of front of house, including special orders and general supplies.

8. Identify and report facility/maintenance issues as they arise.

9. Attend designated staff meetings and special functions.

10. Submit maintenance requests

Manage and oversee Café Crew Members (Interns) and Front of House staff

1. Training

2. Scheduling of Café Crew Members (Interns)

3. Assign duties to front of house staff: barista and Café Crew Members

4. Create checklist of daily duties for Café Crew Members and ensure completion

5. Complete required documentation for Café Crew Members’ program

6. Ensure quick and efficient communication between front of house and back of house.

Job Coaching

1. Responsible for carrying out the job skills training program

2. Provide on-the-job supervision of Café Crew Members (Interns)

3. Learn the necessary job duties and teach Café Crew Members how to properly carry them out.

4. Teach job-related skills (clocking in/out, customer service, communication skills, basic cleaning, grooming, interview techniques, etc.) to Café Crew members.

5. Advocate for the Café Crew Members.

6. Use good judgement in handling situations which may arise and notify the Community Engagement Coordinator of the situation. Notify Supported Employment contact in case of a more serious situation.

7. Document in writing daily notes regarding the interns’ performance and areas of concern.

8. Manage the Café Crew Members’ work schedules.

9. Communicate with parents/conservators/guardians about scheduling, etc.

10. Assist Supported Employment Coordinator (SEC) in the job search as requested.

POS system

1. Oversee operation of POS system.

2. Train Café staff on POS.

3. Input menu items, discounts, merchandise, and so forth.

4. Ensure pricing is accurate and adjust as needed.

5. Oversee inventory management.

Money handling

1. Counting the register

2. Prepare and deliver bank deposits.

3. Complete card and cash transactions. Making change.

4. Apply discounts (override for discounts).

5. Maintain adequate change denominations in cash drawer and request additional change.

6. Reconcile cash drawer and sales receipts.

Promote Café: collaborate with Director of Marketing & Community Engagement

1. Social Media engagement/promotions

2. Ideas for advertising the café

3. Request marketing materials

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises Front of House staff, including Barista and Café Crew Members (Interns), and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s polices and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training Café Crew Members, planning, assigning, directing work, appraising performance, addressing complaints, and resolving problems. Assists with the sorting, pricing, and ordering for the Café. Ensures that a safe and healthy environment is maintained for all parties involved.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. High School Diploma or GED.

2. Valid Tennessee, Kentucky, or Alabama driver’s license

3. Ability to read and follow directions.

4. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

5. TB test within the last 12 months is required.

6. Satisfactory criminal background check and clear driving record

7. Ability/availability to attend and pass all training courses offered and required of the Department of Developmental & Intellectual Disabilities (DIDD), PDI, and TennCare Employment Community First.

8. Possess dynamic, engaging, and energetic personality.

9. Ability to multi-task along with a record of providing excellent customer service.

10. Ability to make an independent decision and/or to contact the supervisor for guidance.

EDUCATIONAL and/or EXPERIENCE:

This position requires a minimum of a High School Diploma or GED and restaurant, restaurant lead, management and/or equivalent experience. Successful completion of Food Service Training.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

This person will need the ability to read and comprehend simple and complicated instructions, short/lengthy correspondence, and/or memos; ability to write detailed correspondence; ability to verbally communicate effectively.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals, and understand percentages; ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement: volume and distance.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple and detailed written or oral instructions: Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. The person will need the ability to apply common sense and understanding to carry out

instructions furnished in written or oral form; the ability to handle problems in a positive manner and find effective solutions or know where to seek assistance

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers, to handle objects, and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, bend, sit, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. This position will require general cleaning, to include sweeping, mopping, dusting, and so forth of the Café as well as moving and sliding furniture around. Walking most of the day and on your feet 95% of the shift.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Valid Tennessee, Alabama, or Kentucky driver’s license. CPR, and First Aid Training Provided.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Schedule may at times be outside of the normal 6:30am-3pm hours. Number of hours on the job varies according to Café needs. The Café Coordinator/Job Coach providing services to Employment Community First clients must participate and successfully complete the competency-based course TRN Job Coaching & Consulting.
