Johnson College is seeking a Building Trades Instructor to teach in person classes at our new satellite Hazleton campus. The Building Trades Instructor or qualified candidate should have expertise in building maintenance, carpentry, electrical, and/or pluming (or any combination). A minimum of 4 years’ experience in the construction industry performing related work. The ideal candidate should have demonstrated knowledge in rough and finish carpentry; concrete and masonry construction; framing, roofing, flooring, and drywall work; interior and external painting; plumbing and electrical, both basic and advanced, is preferred.

This position will include organizing and delivering class syllabi and objectives in a clear, concise manner, maintaining an organized and safe lab; ensuring training aids, tools, and equipment are maintained and prepared for use in the classroom and labs; keeping accurate records of student performance and making the timely submission of academic records; providing students and timely feedback.

The individual should have knowledge of all the tools, equipment, skills and resources utilized in the field as well as the ability to work with students in the construction of building simulations through hands-on applications. The ideal candidate should have the ability to speak confidently in front of a small crowd, a passion for recruiting into the skilled trades, and flexible work hours, including evening classes. All teaching positions require a minimum of 4-5 years of technical experience and/or an Associate’s degree, preferred. Prior teaching experience is preferred but not required for most positions.

Johnson College is seeking a Building Trades Instructor. The Building Trades Instructor is responsible to manage, maintain, and supervise their course of study. The Building Trades Instructor should have expertise in building maintenance, carpentry, electrical, and/or plumbing (or any combination). The instructor is responsible for course development, delivery, and assessment. The instructor will report directly to the Program Director.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide instruction, as specified in the curriculum, in the basics of the building trades such as carpentry, plumbing, and electricity. Instruction will be multi-disciplinary and will include many different trades.
  • Maintain course of study by reviewing syllabi, course curriculum, books
  • Assist with the selection and review of library resources to keep them current for course of study
  • The instruction will include, but not limited to building maintenance, carpentry, electrical, and/or plumbing trades (or any combination)
  • Enforce college policies and procedures with program students
  • Demonstrated knowledge in Rough and finish carpentry; concrete and masonry construction; framing, roofing, flooring, and drywall work; interior and external painting; and building design; Plumbing and electrical troubleshooting, both basic and advanced, is preferred.
  • Maintain safe learning environment within program areas
  • The instructor should have knowledge of all the tools, equipment, skills and resources utilized in the field as well as the ability to work with students in the construction of building simulations through hands-on applications.
  • Submit student book/tool kit/parts information to the Program Director
  • Work with Academics to develop scheduling and transferability of coursework
  • Provide student advisement and assistance when necessary
  • Promote the program and assist with the procurement of educational resources and equipment
  • Participation in professional organizations
  • Assist the Continuing Education Department as required
  • Participation in College activities and events
  • Participate and be an active member in assigned campus committee(s).
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

EDUCATION:

Technical- Associate Degree in the subject or related subject taught

General Education – Master’s Degree and 15 credits in the course being taught

EXPERIENCE:

Technical -Minimum of 4 years’ experience in the area taught. Expertise in building maintenance, carpentry, electrical and/or plumbing trades (or any combination) is required, and teaching experience preferred.

SKILLS:

Individuals must have strong communications skills, ability to teach, expertise in their program area, good managerial skills, knowledge of industry standards, assessment skills, organizational and word-processing skills.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Enforce college policies and procedures with all students and within their course of study.

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED:

Equipment used in program of study, computers and associated software.

Johnson College, Hazleton is located within 30 minutes of Berwick, PA and 40 minutes south of Wilkes-Barre, PA. This campus is designed to make technology education more readily available to the communities of Hazleton, West Hazleton, McAdoo, Conyngham, Mahnoy City, Delano, Tamaqua and their surrounding areas in Luzerne County PA. Johnson College Hazleton is just off route 924 and is only 5 minutes from Interstate 81 in Hazle Township.
