General Description:

The Billing Specialist will be responsible for maintaining a thorough knowledge of the billing system and front desk workflows and training Patient Services Representatives. This position will be responsible for ensuring that claims are processed in an accurate and timely manner and that claims are paid accurately. The Billing Specialist will accept patient payments and assist patients with any billing questions and will provide support to Patient Services Representatives.

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Work Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years medical office experience

Licensure and Certification:

  • None required

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain thorough knowledge of the billing system and PSR and PAR workflows
  • Provide initial and ongoing PSR training on billing system
  • Evaluate front office performance and identify training opportunities
  • Make visits to health center sites
  • Maintain knowledge of billing and coding, including CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS, and HEDIS
  • Charge entry and review
  • Collect and post payments
  • Collect on delinquent accounts
  • Submit accounts to collection agency
  • Verify insurance coverage
  • Review patient accounts for accuracy
  • Discuss accounts with patients
  • Follow-up/correct unpaid claims, including by phone or insurance portal
  • Resolve denied claims
  • Send Good Faith Estimates
  • Assist front office staff

Skills:

  • Able to read, write, and communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Great interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Proficient in use of computer and keyboard
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Able to manage self and environment calmly and appropriately in stressful situations
  • Thorough knowledge of billing system
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to multitask and manage time efficiently
  • Outstanding problem solving and organizational abilities

Physical Abilities:

  • Able to push, pull and reach, sit, stoop and stretch
  • Have full range of body motion
  • Have the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity needed to operate a computer, telephone, copier, and office equipment
  • Required to talk and hear
  • Vision abilities required for this job include close vision with extended exposure to a computer screen

Work Environment:

This position involves exposure to customer/patient elements. This job operates in a professional office environment with a noise level of quiet to moderate. This role routinely uses standard Office equipment such as computers, telephones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
