POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for implementing and monitoring a facility wide risk management program to include compliance with all accreditation and regulatory standards. Responsibilities include: 1) assessment, implementation, coordination and evaluation of Joint Commission, state and federal regulations/standards; 2) monitoring compliance with ongoing programs; 3) maintaining a current and comprehensive knowledge of applicable law and regulatory guidelines pertinent to all areas of responsibility. This position will be responsible for coordinating UHS TERM Document (Technical Elements of Risk Management). Other duties as assigned.

MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Directs and coordinates Risk Management activities of identification, investigation, analysis and evaluation of risk and the selection of most advantageous method of correcting, reducing or eliminating identifiable risks.
  • Maintains systems, which provide for accurate, efficient and timeliness of standards of care, patient safety, and compliance with standards established by the hospital, medical staff, TJC, state licensure, and other accrediting bodies and third-party payers.
  • Oversees and coordinates the development, implementation, collection, aggregation, analyzing and reporting of all data obtained throughout the hospital on quality of care, patient safety and improvement activities. Works with appropriate clinical and support departments in determining cause to variations from established expectancies and performance improvement.
  • Conducts the annual FMEA for both the hospital, acute, and residential services.
  • Development and maintains an accurate database for Patient Safety and Incident Reporting activities. Responsible for data collection, aggregation, analyzing and reporting of data complies for Patient Safety, Risk Management programs and as requested by Administration, Marketing and referral agencies.
  • Oversees hospital functions and reporting for compliance with accreditation standards (TJC); coordinates preparation for surveys and writes follow-up reports.
  • Establish, manage and monitor safety standards, processes, communications, training and systems for employees.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

EDUCATION:

  • Masters degree in healthcare or social services field preferred.
  • Previous experience in a role with responsibility for risk management required.
  • Experience dealing with regulatory agencies (TJC, CPS, Licensing, Human Rights, etc.) required.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:

  • In order to operate Cumberland’s vehicles, a current Virginia driver’s license with a good driving record (minimum of +1 points) is required.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have patience, tact, and a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm.
  • Good communication skills, must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Basic clerical skills and basic experience with office equipment (telephone, copy machine, fax, etc.)
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Position requires demonstrated leadership, organization, planning, supervisory, and administrative skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Risk Management, TJC standards, and the survey process is required.
  • Experience with computerized databases, spreadsheets, and word processing is required.
  • Must be able to analyze, comprehend, understand, and synthesize data for overall activities of the department.
  • Ability to interpret and evaluate data. Ability to adapt and respond to a variety of activities/situations simultaneously.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
  • Must have the ability to move throughout the hospital independently.
  • Must be able to exert physical requirements to lift and maneuver objects, this includes kneeling, bending, reaching, pulling, crouching, pushing up to 50 pounds and lifting up to 20 pounds.

INTERPERSONAL RELATIONS:

  • Good communication skills necessary to positively interact with patients, patient’s families, visitors, medical staff, administration, management team, and other staff.
  • Listening, observing, identifying, and reporting of employees needs for effective management of the department.
  • Ability to form relationships based on trust and be able to work with a great variety of people with varied backgrounds and personalities.
