Job Summary and Qualifications

Position Description: Bariatric Coordinator

The primary role of the Bariatric Coordinator is coordination of care for the Bariatric Surgery patients and management of the Bariatric Surgery Center. This includes the oversight of the operations of the bariatric program and ensuring that program maintains all accreditation and centers of excellence designations applicable (Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program- MBSAQIP, Optum Centers of Excellence for Bariatric Program, Aetna Institutes of Quality for Bariatric Surgery, Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric Surgery, Cigna Centers of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery). Also includes the development and growth of the program, marketing of the program, patient and staff education as well as the oversight of the multidisciplinary team and acting as the liaison between the hospital and surgical practices.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree-Clinical license required

At least 2-3 years of experience in a leadership role in an acute care setting.

Master's degree Preferred

(MBSAQIP-Accredited centers must have a designated MBS Coordinator who assists and works directly with the MBS Director. The MBS Coordinator must be a licensed or registered health care professional.)

Essential Duties:

• Must serve as a liaison between the center and the MBSAQIP.
• ( If The MBS Coordinator fills the role of the MBS Clinical Reviewer (see Standard 2.7), this individual is NOT allowed to document in patients’ medical records.)
• The MBS Coordinator administrates the MBS Committee and must attend at least two of the three required meetings, one of which must be the annual comprehensive review meeting, as well as the majority of all other meetings.
• The MBS Coordinator assists in program development, managing the accreditation process, ensuring continuous compliance with MBSAQIP Standards, maintaining relevant pathways and protocols, patient education, monitoring outcomes data and collection, quality improvement initiatives, and the education of relevant staff with a focus on metabolic and bariatric patient safety.
• The MBS Coordinator supports the development of written protocols and education of nursing staff detailing the rapid communication and basic response to critical patient findings that are specifically required to minimize delays in the diagnosis and treatment of serious adverse events.
• The MBS Coordinator serves as the liaison between the facility and all metabolic and bariatric proceduralists at the center and any general surgeons providing call coverage.
• The MBS Coordinator assists in maintaining the documentation of the call schedule provided by all covering surgeons, as well as providing access to the call schedule to all departments of the facility that provide care for metabolic and bariatric patients.
• If the MBS Coordinator and MBS Clinical Reviewer are separate individuals, they must work closely together to ensure timely submission of outcomes data to the MBSAQIP Registry.
• The center’s organizational framework must incorporate the MBS Coordinator position. The MBS Coordinator must have a job description or contract documenting the authority and resources to fulfill the above listed duties.
• The MBS Coordinator must be present and actively participate in each MBSAQIP site visit for their Current center(s).
• Assists in administrative functions and the development & implementation of patient care protocols, clinical pathways and in updating patient policies and procedures for care of bariatric surgery patients
• Assist on daily rounds on all bariatric surgery patients. Assesses and monitors the continuity of care and expedites and coordinates the delivery of services to facilitate a patient's progress throughout the continuum of care, from point of first interest, through the qualification period, the surgery process, post-op care, and post discharge to achieve desired quality outcomes
• Assumes a leadership role to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration and review the plan of care and communicate findings effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
• Maintains outpatient records accurately, completely, timely and confidentially according to policies
• Facilitates patient and family education, and the discharge process to promote continuity of care after discharge and optimal patient outcomes. Reviews and revises patient education materials. Performs telephone follow-up surveys on patients post discharge, at specified intervals and annually for up to 5 years
• Functions as a clinical liaison and resource for the hospital program. Is responsible for assisting the hospital with achieving and maintaining BSCOE certification/accreditation through meeting or exceeding COE standards of care and participating in site visits, tour of facility, evaluation of center and quality of care, interviews, random chart audits and rectifying any identified issues
• Assists in the identification and reporting of quality issues, and in the development of a performance improvement plan for the Bariatric Surgery Program to assess and improve the quality and efficiency of the program including but not limited to quality assessment, utilization review, risk management, and infection control. Identifies appropriate indicators to monitor and track and in conjunction with marketing, tracks patient data advertising campaigns, and patient referral outcomes
• Works in conjunction with and assists leadership and clinical nurse specialists in developing curriculum and providing skills labs or in-service education for Medical Staff, employees or contract staff regarding the special needs of bariatric patients. (Sensitivity training, lift & transfer techniques, complications of bariatric surgery, post-op care psychosocial needs etc.)
• Assists and attends monthly community lectures and support group meetings, and keeps class advertising and calendar listings updated for the website and other advertising venues. Coordinates and collaborates with the patient support group facilitator and facilitates meetings as necessary in the absence of a facilitator. Facilitates and participates in the post-op patient care lectures including nutrition, exercise, and psycho-social changes
• Conducts pre-operative patient education classes
• Exhibits behaviors and actions which create a high level of patient/ customer satisfaction, which contributes to positive patient/customer relations and which reflect respect for the patient's/customer's rights, needs and confidentiality
• Promotes the practice to referring physicians and referral coordinators. Maintains contact with referrals offices and hospital departments, addresses problems immediately and searches for ways to improve service and increase referrals
• Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested
• Participates in professional development activities to keep current with health care trends and practices
• Prepares reports and manages assigned projects
• Maintains strict confidentiality of personal health information (PHI) following Premier HIPAA policy and government regulation. Maintains strict confidentiality of employee information
• Partners with Marketing hospital resources to coordinate patient outreach efforts and will be responsible for marketing bariatric program.
