EDUCATION ACCREDITATION: Applicants education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained at www.naces.org.
ELIGIBILITY: Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK: Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to this position identified as positions of trust will be required to authorize the release of and successfully complete a Fingerprint check.
PROBATION: All persons, including current City employees, selected from this position will be on probation for 6 months.
Salary: $44,953.00 - $51,334.00 USD Annually
CLASS DESCRIPTION:
An Automotive Mechanic performs a wide range of diagnostic, installation, maintenance, and repair work on a variety of automotive, heavy trucks, heavy equipment, and other mechanical equipment. The work of this class involves no lead or supervisory duties or responsibilities.

Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class may work shift work including weekend hours and are subject to callback. Work is performed in an automotive repair shop where unpleasant odors and dirty and greasy shop conditions are regularly encountered. Work requires strenuous physical exertion including lifting, bending, crawling, and periods of prolonged standing.

SELECTION PROCESS

The training and experience of each candidate will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity. It is essential, therefore, that you give complete and accurate information on your application. MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:
On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:

EDUCATION: Have graduated from an accredited high school or possess a GED certificate.
AND
EXPERIENCE: Have four years of experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive and other mechanical equipment.
OR

NOTE (EQUIVALENCIES): Have six months of additional experience in automotive maintenance and repair work may be substituted for each year of the high school or GED requirement or completion of one year of the required coursework in an automotive mechanic curriculum in an accredited high school, vocational school or college or university may be substituted for one year of the experience requirement or an associate's degree from an accredited college or university in automotive technology or a related field may be substituted for two years of the experience requirement or completion of a recognized Motor Equipment Mechanic apprenticeship program may be substituted for the experience requirement.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND CERTIFICATIONS: Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management is required.

Some positions in this class require a valid Maryland Class B Commercial driver's license, or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management is required.
EXAMINATION PROCESS:

Applicants must provide sufficient information on their application to show that they meet the qualifications for this recruitment. Successful applicants will be placed on the employment-certified eligible list for at least six months.

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience as presented on your application and as they relate to the requirements of the position. You may be required to complete supplemental questions to further examine specific Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities of the position. Therefore, it is important that you provide complete and accurate information on your application.

NOTES: Employees will receive an hourly stipend for up to eight ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certificates obtained and maintained. Employees must provide their own tools.

Those eligible who are under final consideration for appointment to some positions in this class will be required to authorize the release of criminal conviction information and submit to drug and alcohol testing.
This position is required to complete a Financial Disclosure pursuant to Sections 7-7, 7-8, and 7-9 of the City Ethics Law.
