Position: Audio Systems Engineer

Position Summary:
The Audio Systems Engineer plays a vital part in the production process at Gateway Studios & Production Services. The Audio Systems Engineer oversees the configuration, operation, and troubleshooting of all audio equipment used in the execution of services and special events. This includes audio equipment connection, sound board setup and configuration, sound checks and other testing, and sound board operation during prep and production of all services and special events.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Major Responsibilities:
1. Leadership:
  • Manage day-to-day technical tasks in the shop.
  • Analyze the technical specs for build-out of racks and equipment, especially PA Systems.
  • Understand PA system prep work and documentation, and work with team members to prep PAs to job specs.
  • Keep up with advancements in the field.
  • Interface with clients when necessary, pertaining to prep, in-shop setup, drive rack setup, and PA configurations.
2. Configuration and Documentation:
  • Document technical builds in a manner that can be replicated and manage drive rack systems.
  • Ensure all assets are technically prepared as it pertains to network structures (IP schemes) correct connections, and file management on behalf of clients needs.
  • Knowledge and certifications of all assets/inventory.
  • Maintain documentation of all racks when necessary.
  • Maintain records of updates and service in the company’s inventory system.
3. Prep Audio:
  • Prepare in shop the set-up of audio, including hanging, laying and connecting power cables, operating audio equipment, programming audio control consoles, installing and operating speaker systems, maintaining equipment readiness and equipment inventory.
  • Evaluate the status of the soundboards, microphones, amplifiers, audio lines, monitors and speakers, and reconfigure as needed on a job to job basis.
  • Check and QC all items related to the PA systems, including computers, amplifiers, drive racks, speakers, carts, cabling, etc.
  • Coordinate with other team members to prep the tour/special event as planned.
  • Load and set audio equipment manually into carts or containers and transfer equipment to its destination point for loading or unloading in a safe manner.
  • Rig PA systems via electric chain hoist systems safely.
4. Equipment Prep and Testing:
  • Carry out audio tests on speakers and microphones, position speakers and microphones during prep, and manage the inventory of audio equipment.
  • Test audio equipment for volume, tone, and clarity.
  • Evaluate audio equipment for repair and maintenance, and make minor repairs on equipment as needed.
  • Operate mixing consoles and adjust sounds and volumes when necessary.
5. Communication:
  • Communicate with lead audio technician and co-workers as needed throughout projects to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Interfacing with company network specialists of all departments.
  • Working with other departments to ensure systems are cross compatible when necessary.
6. Safety:
  • Ensure workplace safety and efficiency.
  • Follow proper safety protocol at all times.
  • Wear proper PPE at all times, based on the scope of work.
7. Attendance:
  • Attendance is an essential requirement for this position.
  • When necessary, the audio system engineer role will include some travel, but is not a touring role.
8. Any and all other duties:
  • To be determined by supervisor on a permanent or project basis.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certificates:
  • High School Grad or GED required.
  • Associates or BS degree in audio-related field preferred.
  • Certification in relevant fields is necessary. Including but not limited to, Dante Audio, Networking, Smaart Analyzer Software, d&b Audio training and rigging.
  • Forklift and aerial boom certified preferred.
  • OSHA 10 or 30 preferred.
Experience:
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team and remain professional under pressure / high stress situations.
  • Strong working knowledge of audio equipment including but not limited to mixing consoles, PA. systems, microphones, cabling and patching systems, wireless systems.
  • Experience with repair and maintenance of sound equipment.
  • Experience with safely rigging PA systems via electric chain hoist systems.
  • Experience with PA System management, signal flow.
  • Experience with PA time alignment and tuning.
  • Touring experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience with modern PA systems.
Skills/Abilities:
  • Ability to work under a variety of indoor and outdoor conditions.
  • Troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to work at a consistent pace throughout the shift.
  • Due to the complexity and weight of the equipment, adequate stamina and physical strength is necessary to perform duties of job.
  • Work with power cables and power distribution in common live event environments.
  • Work under any prevailing terrain and weather conditions and be appropriately dressed to do so, regardless of cold, heat, humidity, or wet weather conditions.
Strength:
  • Frequent manual lifting, up to 50 lbs., depending on equipment available (50-80% of shift).
  • Frequent pushing and pulling up to 50 lbs., depending on equipment available (50-80% of shift).
Manual Dexterity:
  • Sufficient manual dexterity to perform activities required under essential functions.
  • Frequent light grasping and fine motor tasks (65-85% of shift).
Coordination:
  • Ability to perform gross body coordination and hand-eye coordination tasks without instability.
  • Work on a variety of uneven surfaces installing power cables and lights.
Mobility:
  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, squat, lift, crawl, twist and move frequently during working hours.
  • Frequent standing (65-85%).
  • Occasional stair climbing and descending (30% of shift).
Visual:
  • Must be able to see or use prosthetics that will enable the senses to function adequately to assure that the essential functions of this position can be fully met.
Hearing:
  • Must be able to hear or use prosthetics that will enable the senses to function adequately to assure that the essential functions of this position can be fully met.
Speech:
  • Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner.
