Facility Statement:

The mission of Vandalia Correctional Center includes maintaining a safe adn secure environment for all staff and individuals in custody as well as porviding progrmas as designed to assist individuals in custody in their re-entry into society. To attain maximum success of these programs, security and accountablity of individuals in custody remains the centers' main goal.


The Vandalia Correctional Center is located 85 miles southeast of Springfield, was established as the original prison farm operation in Illinois houseing entirely misdemenor individuals in custody. The center has dorm type setting with 113 buildings, totaling 412,000 square feet. Total acreage is 1,520 with eight acres contained within the perimeter fence.

This position is to serve as the Assistant Warden of Programs (Senior Public Service Administrator Option 7) for the IL Department of Corrections at Vandalia Correctional Center.

Job Responsibilities

  • As Assistant Warden, provides input into the development, establishment, and implementation of institutional rules, regulations, directives, policies, and procedures of the institution, to ensure proper operation of daily functions.
  • Plans, organizes and directs the overall Program functions and their managers, including health care services, mental health, chaplaincy, and clinical services, leisure activity and records office.
  • Conducts interviews and counsels' individuals in custody.
  • Serves as full line supervisor.
  • Conducts daily routine inspection tours of the institution for security, safety and sanitation and makes recommendations to the Warden as to any changes, problems, or improvements that may be needed.
  • Serves on various committees.
  • Travels to various locations to attend management meetings, trainings and to speak to lay and professional groups regarding the institution programs.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college, preferably with courses in law enforcement, criminology, penology or a related field.
  • Requires four (4) years of progressively responsible administrative experience in a law enforcement public or private organization, a correctional facility or related field.

  • Requires ability to travel.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. On January 1, 2020, the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act made it legal for residents over the age of 21 to produce, consume and sell cannabis in Illinois. Please note that although the law has changed, the Department will continue to enforce the Department’s zero-tolerance Drug Testing policy. The use of unauthorized drugs, including cannabis, by an employee, regardless of the position held is prohibited.
  • Requires the ability to be on-call.
