Job Description: Assistant Store Manager

Reports to: Manager/General Manager/Owner
Direct Reports: Retail Management team, Sales Associates/Cashiers

Position Philosophy: The duties of the Assistant Manager position are to be performed by demonstrating and encouraging Owenhouse Ace Hardware’s core values in order to achieve our vision of being the best place to work and the best place to shop.

The Assistant Manager is responsible for ensuring that all employees are providing exceptional customer service. The Assistant Manager is responsible for leading all associates by example with our Core Values within all activities of the store. The Assistant Manager must be able to manage tasks with the level of staffing that is needed on the sales floor to execute great customer service. The Assistant Manager must also work closely with the store Manager to ensure that the store is optimally stocked and merchandised. Always working towards the store goal of amazing every customer every time. The Assistant Manager is responsible for working closely with the store Manager in the growth and development of the store team. Working closely with the Manager of Training/Culture and assuring the associates are knowledgeable and driving customer service and sales excellence.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Sales & Operations:
Participates in and reviews store walks with the store Manager and staff to identify opportunity areas, and correct all issues with a sense of urgency.
Participates in the daily MOD responsibilities.
Is responsible for following all best practice procedures (store walks, zoning checklists, observations, huddles, etc.) – using Trello to manage and control delegation of tasks and post all best practices results.
Monitor inventory levels in conjunction with the store Manager on a monthly basis to ensure the store maintains an inventory record accuracy level of 85% or higher.
Coordinate with the store Manager the overall daily supervision of retail staff to ensure that monthly sales performance goals are met and company procedures are followed accurately.
Delegate daily workload among associates to meet merchandising and visual presentation standards through the use of Trello.
Participate in the 180-day evaluation and monthly 1-2-1s process to provide feedback to the store Manager for improvement and growth opportunities. Assure all employee observations, zone checklists, and all best practices are conducted.
Responsible for supporting the store Manager to ensure that merchandise plans including monthly end caps, hot zones, and seasonal flips are all merchandised on the sales floor and are completed per store calendar.
Responsible for working with the store Manager in the hiring of staff.
Works through the store Manager on all disciplinary actions. Thoroughly documents all conversations and actions for the employee file.

Customer Service:
Promote Customer Service as The #1 Priority. This must be accomplished on a daily basis through coaching monitoring employee’s performance and interactions on the sales floor.
Regularly promote and teach the concept of “Every Customer Every Time” on the sales floor, leading by example and through continuous feedback and sales/customer service coaching. Use huddles and store meetings as the venue to communicate and reinforce the concept.
Respond immediately to all customer complaints working with the store Manager to resolve them within 48 hours.
Review all Mystery Shops on a monthly basis, and work with the store Manager and staff to improve all shops and assure goals are met.
Participate in all store huddles.

Budgets and Payroll:
Monitor schedules on a bi-weekly basis with the store Manager to ensure compliance with each employee clocking in and out accurately according to the published schedule. Take corrective measures as necessary.
Control Overtime hours to meet budget as set by store Manager.

Inventory Control:
Work with the store Manager and the Manager of Inventory to review retail inventory and overstock to: reduce shrinkage, maintain appropriate stock levels, and ensure inventory reporting accuracy. Always providing input to the store Manager to assure the product is maintained on the sales floor.

Communications:
Through Trello/Huddles - keep store staff sufficiently informed about plans, projects, policies, and procedures, such that all staff members have an appropriate and positive level of buy-in to all levels of store operations. Working closely with the store Manager.
Delegate all tasks through Trello and follow up to assure tasks are done properly and provide regular and daily feedback to the team as appropriate.

Personal Development:
Attend Ace and Retail People Solutions training and meetings as necessary and determined by the store Manager and Manager of Training/Culture.
Utilize the IDP process to identify development goals and training – work closely with the store Manager and the Manager of Training/Culture on IDPs.

Coaching and Training:
Identify appropriate training for store associates and work closely with the store Manager and the Manager of Training/Culture regarding training requirements on a monthly basis for all associates (New-Hire orientation, on-the-job training, and vendor training).
Help establish goals with the store Manager and the Manager of Training/Culture for growth and success in floor staff positions, provide performance feedback and recognize accomplishments.
Utilize daily huddles to facilitate training topics as determined by the store Manager.
Actively participate in the “Values in Action” recognition program and establish and initiate other appropriate recognition systems in order to create the culture within the store needed for success.

Safety Compliance and Housekeeping:
Maintain a high level of housekeeping throughout the store, both inside and out.
Enforce safety policies and procedures; is a safety role model.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Place proper priorities on work to be done.
Have a good concept of overall management responsibilities.
Keep well informed on facts important to management.
Must have excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate at all levels of management and front line. Ability to use the DiSC profile tool to develop strong employee and customer relationships.
Fair and impartial in dealing with employees.
Provide and accept constructive suggestions and instructions.
High degree of analytical skills, and the ability to delegate and be self-directed.
Excellent organizational and project management skills
Be technically proficient in using Activant Software and have a solid understanding of how information flows through the system.
Technically skilled in basic computer knowledge and software (such as, Word, Excel, Email, Google Docs, internet research).
Ability to handle multiple projects/tasks with high attention to detail and follow-up.
Dress appropriately and according to company policy.
Ability to provide motivation and leadership to employees store-wide and foster a positive company culture.
Always polite - is a good role model of excellent customer service and sales behaviors.

Additional Requirements:
High School degree, some college (Associate) preferred. Possess a vast product knowledge of hardware related products along with a willingness to learn.
Must be available weekends.
Must have 3-5 years retail experience. Some Leadership preferred.
Develops and maintains relationships and strategic partnerships throughout the organization, including employees, management staff, other Ace Hardware stores, Ace corporate, vendors, our community and our neighbors.
Ability and willingness to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends and holidays to meet the needs of the business.

Physical Demands:
Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling.
Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
Requires the ability to reach, bend, balance, lift and transport various objects weighing up to 30 lbs. repeatedly throughout the shift; at times, product weight may reach 50 lbs. Requires the ability to move heavy product with assistance

Salary:
$53K – $65K Salary plus sales incentive bonus (salary based on experience and ability)
