Description of Job

The Assistant State Archaeologist plays a vital role in fulfilling the Office of the State Archaeologist of Colorado's statutory objectives and duties such as: state archaeological and paleontological permit review, preparation and file-keeping; acting as the official liaison with the Colorado Archaeological Society (CAS), the state's main avocational group; assuming responsibility for all review, permit and technical assistance issues involving paleontological projects; and acting as principal investigator for archaeological field work on state lands as requested.

Duties

Public Education
Coordinates the Program for Avocational Archaeological Certification PAAC; statewide schedule of courses and other PAAC events are prepared every six months.
Prepares, revises and teaches courses as needed, prepares schedule of classes, drafts and grades tests, maintains program records, updates program details on web site.
Directs Summer Training Survey, directs winter laboratory training, directs site form and other workshops, promotes PAAC, documents fulfillment of certification requirements, develops new courses as need arises, travels.
Recruits and trains other staff with OSAC and/or OAHP for teaching PAAC related courses. Supports and updates volunteers list based on PAAC qualifications.
Maintains and updates speakers list; liaises with the Colorado Archaeological Society (CAS.
Attends and presents program reports to quarterly and annual CAS meetings.
Presents public outreach programs to schools, CAS chapters, and other interested organizations. Attends and contributes to professional archaeological conferences.

Managing the State Permitting System and Compliance with State Laws
AS per Historical, Prehistorical and Archaeological Resources Act of 1973 C.R.S. 24-80-403 – 405, this position manages archaeology and paleontology permit application process; prepares permits for the State Archaeologist’s signature.
Compiles log of issued permits and enters on computer; provides on-site review and in-house technical assistance as requested; provides technical assistance about state permit requirements to professional archaeologists, paleontologists, the public, and outside agencies.
Collaborates in updates of forms, manuals and guidelines; writes reports on results of field work, including related journal articles; reviews compliance projects as requested; provides technical assistance and reviews of paleontology projects; performs investigations of unmarked human graves on non-federal/non-tribal lands as needed; works with volunteers and interns and performs other duties as assigned.

Supervises
This position works closely with the State Archaeologist, and acts as a supervisor to the Staff Resource Specialist and the Emery Archaeology Laboratory Manager, ensuring that those positions are fulfilling their duties in a satisfactory manner. In addition, this position serves as the liaison to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) shared position, which oversees archaeological stewardship on CPW lands.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

The minimum professional qualifications in archeology are a graduate degree in archeology, anthropology, or closely related field plus:
1) at least one year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archeological
research, administration or management;
2) at least four months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archeology;
and
3) demonstrated ability to carry research to completion.

Additional requirements:
The position requires specific experience and/or familiarity with the details of Colorado archaeology. Skills as a teacher are essential in PAAC, with the ability to endure teaching sessions up to eight hours in length. PAAC course teaching materials include many boxes of artifacts for hands-on examination, necessitating upper body strength to lift up to 30 pound boxes and carry them more than 50 yards at the beginning and end of the workday.
