The newly formed Sexually Transmitted Infections Reference Laboratory are looking to recruit a well-motivated, enthusiastic individual to work in a busy laboratory environment. The post-holder must be pro-active, reliable and professional at all times. Duties will include working as part of a team within the STI reference laboratory to support the delivery of specialist and reference services, national antimicrobial surveillance programmes,and research into characterisation of and antimicrobial resistance in bacterial STIs.

Applicants must have GCSE English, Maths and Science (or equivalent). Previous experience of working in a bacteriology or a molecular microbiology laboratory environment using computerised data systems, together with knowledge and understanding of laboratory safety requirements and procedures is essential. Previous experience of working on STI microbiology and/or antimicrobial resistance is desirable.

This is a laboratory based role. The post-holder will:
  • work as part of a multidisciplinary team within the Department and contribute to the provision of a reference service for microbiological samples.
  • Work independently or as part of a team to undertake routine preparation and examination of variety of samples
  • Prioritize personal workloads and make adjustments to accommodate urgent work items.
To assist in the general running and maintenance of the laboratory.

Eligibility Criteria

Open to all external applicants (anyone) from outside the Civil Service (including by definition internal applicants).

As part of the application process, you will be asked to provide a Personal Statement in no more than1250words. This should outline how you consider your skills, experience and achievements, provide evidence of your suitability for the role, with particular reference to the essential criteria outlined.

You will also be asked to provide information within the ‘Employer/ Activity history’ section of the application form. This is equivalent to the information you would provide on a CV, setting out your career history (this will be used in sifting process and will be scored).

STAGE 1 - APPLICATION & SIFT:
You will be required to complete an application form. This will be assessed in line with the advertised criteria.

If you are successful at this stage, you will progress to interview.

Unfortunately, late applications will not be considered.

STAGE 2 – INTERVIEW:
All candidates who are successful at the sift stage will undertake a single interview.

All applicants that progress to interview will be assessed on their Knowledge and Experience as well as Equality and Diversity.

Grade and Salary

New entrants to the Civil Service are expected to start on the minimum of the pay band.

The internal roles rules apply to existing Civil Servants, i.e. level transfers move on current salary or the pay range minimum, transfers on promotion move to new pay range minimum or receive 10% increase.

Either case is determined by whichever is the highest.
