Currently recruiting for an Assistant Controller position that will support the Finance and Accounting team.


Summary of Position:
Primary responsibilities include supervision of staff, timely and accurate monthly close to include review or preparation of key schedules required for monthly and quarterly financial statements, annual audits, federal tax reporting, compliance and internal control, and cash management.


Location: Arlington, Virginia. (Hybrid work opportunity). Must be based in Washington DC, Maryland or Virginia Metropolitan area.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for timely and accurate schedules and draft financial statements. Prepares or reviews a variety of monthly journal entries and account reconciliation schedules. Reviews draft financial statements for reasonableness. Responds to the monthly review notes, and questions from staff, and make corrections as needed. Stays current with GAAP and governmental requirements and recommends changes to accounting methodology as needed.
  • Responsible for key schedules and material for the financial audit, the Single audit, and the retirement plan audit. Prepares or reviews select year-end schedules. Reviews the auditor’s Prepared by Client Lists, meets with the staff and manages the completion of the audit requirements assigned to the staff. Serves as the key contact for select auditor requests and responses. Prepares or reviews the yearly retirement plan census schedule.
  • Assists the controller with compliance with contracts and grants financial requirements, and assists to ensure procedures are in place and followed regarding compliance with funding source requirements, such as HHS, private donors, and other Federal grants. Reviews the close-out of grants with program managers and makes adjusting entries as needed.
  • Assists the controller to oversee and provide direction to staff for all accounting, transaction processing, and internal controls related to AP, AR, GL, and financial reporting. Mentors staff in preparation of journal entries and account analysis.
  • Assists the controller to hire, train, develop, and supervise accounting staff. Meets with any direct reporting staff to review and assess their performance.
  • Prepares or reviews the past due accounts receivable aging, and assists the controller with the collection of past due accounts.
  • Assists with Overseeing cash management and reporting.
  • Responsible for schedules and reports for federal tax filings, including forms 990 and 1099, and related compliance requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required, a CPA preferred.
  • A minimum of 8+ years of experience in a not-for-profit environment.
  • Experience with federal grants and contract management.
  • A minimum of 4 years of supervisory experience.

Knowledge

  • Understanding of not-for-profit accounting principles.
  • Knowledge of single audit cost principles and previous single audit experience.
  • Knowledge of OMB Circulars.

Skills

  • Must be able to prioritize, organize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Has demonstrated skills in problem-solving, confidentiality, and judgment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail are required.
  • Highly skilled with the Microsoft Office suite of products – primarily Excel. Skilled at vlook-up and pivot tables.
  • Experience working with Intacct software is a plus. Experience in selecting and implementing software is desired.
