Arts & Enrichment Private Instructor

(Part-Time, Non-Exempt)

$19.85 to $27.82

Position Summary:

Under the close supervision of the Arts and Enrichment Coordinator, this position teaches art and enrichment classes in a private setting for all ages. Also teaches specialized arts, enrichment classes, birthday parties and special events offsite. Course curriculum includes but is not limited to: fine art, performing arts, drama, dance, music, science, writing, culinary, travel, continuing education and specialized classes for active adults and parent/child and tot programs.

Essential Duties:

  • Responsible for planning and the instruction of art and enrichment classes for participant with varying levels of skill and ability. Must participate in each class and with every level; adapting instruction techniques to meet the needs of the participant.
  • Maintains course records and rosters.
  • Present art by showing examples of selected art, provide student with tools and raw materials to produce their own art, and teach student how to use tools and raw materials properly.
  • Encourage participant to register for next session.
  • Ensure that appropriate equipment/supplies are available for classes and events; set up and take down. Completes preventative maintenance by inspecting equipment on a regular basis.
  • Be prepared, creative and energized when teaching.
  • Provide a safe learning environment; keep student in line of vision at all times/never turn back; enforce safety and program rules, policies, and regulations.
  • Recognize emergency and dangerous situations by reacting quickly and calmly; administer first aid as needed. Completes Accident/Incident report.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Correct or inform supervisor of any facility hazards; communicate issues/complaints to supervisor as needed.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, trainings, and orientations.
  • Travel to offsite special events to instruct and lead art and enrichment classes.
  • Attend work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis; subs for co-workers when available; is responsible for securing substitutes for shifts unable to work.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years old with a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of teaching experience. Specialized art and/or enrichment teaching experience is required.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:

  • Current certifications in AED/CPR and First Aid preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within thirty (30) days of employment. Must be insurable by the District carrier at the onset and for the duration of employment.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of teaching and learning techniques and methodologies.
  • Must be knowledgeable of positive interaction techniques with children, students and their parents, adult and senior students, and staff. Demonstrates use of these techniques in all interactions.
  • Must be able to work with students in a constructive and caring manner while creating unique and fun art projects and teaching safety in the classroom.
  • Requires the ability to communicate verbally with both children and adults.
  • Must be flexible and able to handle multiple tasks and conflicting priorities.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Material and Equipment Used:

To successfully perform the required job duties, this position regularly uses a phone, computer, fax, copies, digital/video cameras, and tools and equipment required for specific course curriculum (e.g art tools, clay, etc.).

Working Environment:

This position works indoors in a classroom or recreation center and must be able to work in a noisy environment. May also work in busy office environment subject to continuous interruptions. This position regularly uses equipment and tools required for specific course curriculum, and office supplies such as a telephone, computer, fax machine, and copier. May occasionally work outside subject to variable weather, ecosystems and landscapes.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to demonstrate and perform the techniques unique to varying art disciplines. Must be able to push, pull or balance. Upper body strength is a requisite to lift/move a maximum of 25 pounds unassisted, and lift/move a maximum of 75 pounds with assistance. Vision requirements include: near acuity, far acuity, and depth perception and color vision. Must be able to frequently sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, reach and lift, exhibit manual dexterity and the ability to handle objects. The ability to talk and hear via the telephone, email, and through face-to-face communication is needed.
