Work Location:
This position works primarily at the D.E. Benton Water Treatment Plant in Garner, NC. Work may be temporarily assigned to other plants based on staffing levels.

Work Hours:
This position works 12-hours shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays, and may work during after-hours emergencies as needed, including inclement weather. At times, the work shift may fall on a holiday and will earn 2.5X overtime pay.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs visual, olfactory and auditory checks of assigned areas of the treatment plant to detect any failures of equipment and electronics.
  • Monitors and validates Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) information, chemical feeds, filter rates, reservoir levels and filter parameters. Operates and makes equipment adjustments as needed.
  • Inspects facility equipment, monitors distribution tank levels, responds to plant equipment alarms and determines required corrective action; performs repairs and/or notifies appropriate maintenance personnel and the leader or supervisor for critical issues.
  • Completes, collects and/or reports sampling and laboratory analysis for process control and/or compliance reporting. Monitors chemical levels within established parameters and verifies accuracy and reliability of data.
  • Receives and responds to briefings related to current plant status such as SCADA, safety, training and daily operating instructions.
  • Enters and maintains data in laboratory information management system as well as daily logs and assignment-related documentation.
  • Receives and monitors chemical deliveries and required tank capacity and maintains appropriate storage of chemicals and supplies. Performs routine grounds maintenance and general maintenance of work areas.
  • Attends team meetings and safety training.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and three years of plant operations or maintenance experience.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications:


  • Certification/licensure for water/wastewater operators consistent with North Carolina law.
  • North Carolina Grade C Surface Certification or the ability to obtain within 2 years of hire.
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with frequent exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.); frequent exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids); frequent exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting and movement restrictions; and moderate exposure intense noise or travel.
