Job description
  • Must possess a Master’s Degree in Counseling and Psychology from an accredited college or university and be eligible to be licensed as a Professional Counselor.
  • Must have a least 1 year of mental health experience collaborating with individuals who are mentally ill and/ or intellectually delayed.
  • Psychology: Must be knowledgeable of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, interests, learning, motivation and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
  • Must possess the following skills: Organizational, Verbal, Interpersonal, Customer Relations, Analytical, and Grammar/Spelling, Read/Comprehend written instructions, Follow verbal instructions and other department specific skills.
  • Therapy and Counseling: Knowledge of principles, methods and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions.
  • Sociology and Anthropology: Must have knowledge of group behavior and dynamics, societal trends and influences, human migrations, ethnicity, cultures and their history and origins.

    • Customer and Personal Services: Knowledge of principles and processes for providing patient services. This includes patient needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
    • Must be able to provide quality counseling for patient’s ages 18 years old and up. Must be able to manage stress appropriately, make decisions under pressure, manage anger/fear/hostility/violence of others appropriately, manage multiple priorities, work alone and work in areas that are confined and/or crowded.

  • Physical Requirements:
    • Must be able to sit for 1 hours/day, stand 2 hours/day, and ambulate ½ hour/day effectively.
    • Must be able to lift and move up to thirty pounds unassisted.
    • Must be able to hear alarms/telephone/tape recorder/normal speaking voice, have good manual dexterity, good eye-hand coordination and have clarity of vision.
    • Must be able to climb, bend, crouch, squat, crawl, kneel, balance self, pull with force, reach above head, reach above shoulders, and twist at waist.
    • Must be able to cope with mental and emotional stress of the position and set the proper example.
    • Must function independently and have personal integrity and the ability to collaborate effectively with personnel and agencies.
    • Must be in good health and demonstrate emotional stability.


  • Job Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Ensure patient dignity and respect patient’s values, operate within ethical standards.
    • Able to assess and reassess the needs of the patient.
    • Proper documentation of assessments, therapy sessions and the ability to communicate needs of patients.
    • Maintain confidentiality of records relating to clients’ treatment.
    • Encourage patients to express their feelings and discuss what is happening in their lives and help them to develop insight into themselves and their relationships.
    • Guide patients in the development of skills and strategies’ for dealing with their problems.
    • Counsel patients, individually and in group sessions to assist in overcoming dependencies, adjusting to life, and making changes.
    • Collect information about patients through observation, interview, and tests
    • Develop and implement treatment plans based on clinical experience, knowledge, and the patient’s individualized need.
    • Collaborate with other staff members and the interdisciplinary team to perform clinical assessments and develop individualized treatment plans.
    • Meet with families, probation offices, police, and other interested parties to exchange necessary information during the treatment process. Evaluate the effectiveness of counseling programs and patients’ progress in resolving identified problems and moving towards defined objectives.
    • Discuss with individual patients their plans for life after leaving therapy.
    • Cover for the Social Workers and Activity Therapy when needed.
    • Monitor patient’s use of medication.
    • Conduct individual psychotherapy sessions in accordance with state regulatory standards, displaying good theoretical knowledge of psychopathology and effective treatment techniques with appropriate supervision.


  • Job Duties and Responsibilities
    • Conduct family therapy sessions in accordance with state regulatory standards, displaying good theoretical knowledge of family therapy principles and effective treatment technique with appropriate supervision.
    • Engage in timely, efficient discharge planning, works in close conjunction with patient, family nursing staff and attending physician. Show good knowledge of referral placement process and available community resources.
    • Work sufficient hours to ensure effective performance and is on 24-hour call to respond to emergencies.
    • May be a member of the Referral Development Committee.
    • Communicate results and trends to supervisor.
    • Be actively involved in measuring patient performance.
    • Provide feedback to supervisor on an ongoing basis regarding concerns, improvement, changes.
    • Identify areas needing improvement and utilizes facility PI Plan.
    • Actively participate in department processes as required.
    • Be able to float to other areas and all other tasks as assigned.
