Job Description

AmeriCorps Explore! Education Assistant will support students and operations at Explore! Community School. Explore! Community School, operated by MOBC, seeks to foster the independence, critical thinking, and creativity of a diverse community of learners so they are fully prepared to become confident, conscientious leaders who change the world. Hours: 7:15 am – 3:30 pm


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide proactive and responsive support for students
  • Collaborate to plan and execute opportunities to support experiential learning for students, including project-based learning
  • Joyful, responsive engagement with students, families, and community members through planning and support of community events
  • Provide operational and logistical support to the Explore! Community School staff
  • Welcome guests and potential families at recruitment events and campus tours
  • Assist in tracking attendance and dismissal schedules, including the use of Infinite Campus and Google Suites
  • Participate in AmeriCorps professional development and community-building workshops

The Martha O’Bryan Center (MOBC) empowers children, youth, and adults in poverty, to transform their lives through work, education, employment, and fellowship. The Center cannot service the community alone, so we partner with organizations like AmeriCorps, to fulfill our mission.


AmeriCorps members serve 1700 hours over the course of 11 months with Martha O'Bryan Center, gaining hands-on experience working with families, youth, and community members. The crucial components of the MOBC—AmeriCorps years of service program allow you to build your community and professional skills, thereby propelling you towards the next steps in your career and life.

AmeriCorps members receive…

  • $19,100 living allowance (paid out twice monthly over the course of 11 months)
  • $6,895 in education award upon successful completion of hours
  • $500/month in housing allowance
  • Potential for housing placement, subject to availability

  • One year toward MOBC seniority (upon successful completion of service)
  • Upon successfully completing your AmeriCorps contract, you can apply for a position at MOBC. Since 2011, 27 AmeriCorps members have become full-time staff with this organization

Qualifications

Required

  • Over 18 years of age
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Legally eligible to work in U.S. (you can see the requirements here)
  • Pass background checks to work with vulnerable populations and children

Preferred:

  • College degree or currently enrolled in a degree program; degree in Education is a plus; candidates with commensurate life experience encouraged to apply
  • Experience with youth population, teaching, or tutoring children
  • Leadership experience is a plus
  • Demonstrated success with participate recruitment and small event planning

Physical Demands & Accessibility

  • Must pass a State of Tennessee childcare physical, including:
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs
  • Agility to move quickly to keep pace with young children
  • Stamina to remain alert and energetic for 8+ hours
