Job Summary


Metropolitan State University, Minnesota’s public, urban university, and recipient of the 2019 Insight into Diversity Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award is seeking to hire an Accounting Assistant. This is a full-time position within the Financial Management division.

Job Responsibilities:

Under limited supervision/procedural control this position is responsible for functioning as the Metropolitan State University bookstore and equipment module accounting assistant. The position has primary responsibilities to investigate and follow-up on reconciliations with bookstore and equipment transactions using applications such as Cap Server, Power BI, and ISRS, providing recommendations to Accounting Services Manager and Financial Management Director. In addition, this position is responsible for the reconciliation of book voucher credit transactions. This position is responsible for making decisions regarding the reconciliation and disposition of payments made on behalf of the university, and any extensive research required to resolve payment issues, and the corrective actions needed to ensure compliance with Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) and the State of Minnesota disbursement policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

The following qualifications are required of all applicants seeking consideration for this position. Only applicants whose application materials clearly demonstrate fulfillment of each of these minimum qualifications will be considered for the position

  • Knowledge of basic accounting and business principles sufficient to monitor, collect and analyze data and implement minor procedural and transactional changes in fiscal operations.
  • Excellent English skills (oral, written and comprehension) and the ability to effectively communicate with all internal and external customers sufficient to explain policies and procedures.
  • Excellent customer service skills are required along with the ability to maintain service levels and communications under often stressful and emergent circumstances.
  • Math skills sufficient to compute totals, averages and percentages, review and reconcile data and accurately balance accounts are required.
  • Excellent organizational skills and problem-solving skills and the ability to prioritize projects to meet required deadlines is required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with vendors, requisition officials, and internal staff is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and work experience in the State of Minnesota Colleges & Universities including policies and procedures is preferred.
  • An understanding of good business practices as it applies to accounting, disbursements, financial aid, purchasing, and receipt techniques along with an excellent understanding of internal control concepts is required.

Physical Requirements

This position requires occasional lifting and/or carrying such articles as file folders, boxes and hand tools. Although a sedentary job is defined as one which involves sitting a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties.

Additional Requirements

In accordance with the Minnesota State Vehicle Fleet Safety Program, employees driving on college/university business who use a rental or state vehicle shall be required to conform to Minnesota State's vehicle use criteria and consent to a Motor Vehicle Records check.
