Position Description

This position announcement is for Accountant - Finance, a full-time Civil Service position in the Finance department. This position is in the Department of Finance, Operations, Division of Accounts and is responsible for performing the complex professional and technical duties involved in financial accounting at the government-wide level. This position requires strong analytical, oral, written and organizational skills. The selected applicant will also have a demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted governmental accounting principles (GAAP).

Metro Finance has several divisions, including operations, procurement, treasury, and management and budget. Department employees provide financial management, information and business products to policy makers, departments, investors and the Nashville community to give them confidence in our government and to help them make informed decisions.

Typical Duties

  • Perform professional accounting duties using the enterprise-wide general ledger accounting system.
  • Function as primary accounting contact for other Metro departments as assigned; reviewing and approving journal entries submitted by departments and other accountants.
  • Analyze and reconcile general and subsidiary ledgers in the accounting system and make adjustments/corrections as needed.
  • Collaborate with departmental accounting staff to ensure compliance with GAAP and the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).
  • Assist the Division of Accounts with Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) preparation, various administrative and financial reporting duties, and may cross-train within other Finance Operations divisions as requested.
  • Coordinate, gather and process information and transactions for Unclaimed Property for Metro and ensure compliance with State guidelines.
  • Responsible for the compilation of Single Audit information across Metro. This includes coordination and communication with departments, as well as preparation of the report for the external auditors.
  • Serve as back-up for the daily cash allocation process.
  • Cross-train on property tax accounting for the Division of Accounts.
  • Check printing back up responsibility for Metro accounts payable and interim payrolls for general government, pension and Metro Nashville Public Schools.
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations and journal entries for cash transactions for specific Metro bank accounts.
  • Work autonomously on projects as needed and perform independent research to formulate best practice solutions.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field from an accredited college or university and some (1-2 years) of professional-level experience in accounting or related field.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Governmental accounting and/or financial statement audit experience
  • Experience with governmental accounting operations and enterprise-wide general ledger systems
  • MS Office skills (Word, Excel) Intermediate to Advanced Excel skills a plus including extensive use of pivot tables and excel functions such as Data Linking and VLOOKUP
