POSITION SUMMARY:

The Youth Employment Coordinator (YEC) under the Special Initiatives portfolio will report to the Special Initiatives Program Coordinator. The Youth Employment Coordinator is responsible for providing a hybrid environment that provides appropriate boundaries within a safe, caring, and enriching opportunity for youth enrolled within the Summer Youth Employment Program. The Youth Employment Coordinator is expected to assist youth who have experienced adversity with participating in the NYC Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). The Youth Employment Coordinator is expected to support youth who specifically reside in Stapleton or West Brighton NYCHA Developments, who are enrolled in District 75 or District 79 schools, and/or youth involved in the ACS, foster care, homelessness, and/or justice systems. The Youth Employment Coordinator will oversee recruitment, enrollment, and youth engagement by conducting outreach in targeted communities within Staten Island to achieve recruitment goals. The role is fast paced and timeline driven. The person selected for this role will possess the ability to manage documents and successfully enroll participants into SYEP with efficiency under the time constraints of DYCD’s programmatic deadlines. The Youth Employment Coordinator will possess the ability to balance administrative duties and youth engagement, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team to meet the needs of the youth.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to):

  • Support youth recruitment efforts via in person and virtually, by circulating flyers in the community, hosting workshops, and visiting community-based partners
  • Collect and review SYEP enrollment paperwork through DYCD’s online portal
  • Conduct outreach to youth via text message, phone call, and email
  • Participate in youth development related community outreach events including but not limited to: tabling, partner agency events, and any other events deemed appropriate
  • Provide in-person support at local community centers, NYCHA developments, or other targeted areas serving youth populations
  • Maintain a participant application tracker, ensuring it is updated in a timely manner
  • Work collaboratively with other team members during the program’s phases to ensure all youth receive program information, support for documents/enrollment, orientation & job placements, and programmatic team goals are achieved
  • Co-facilitate or support orientation sessions, job placement sessions, and additional work-readiness workshops
  • Provide technical assistance to participants before and during summer programming related to troubleshooting weekly hours entry, collection of evaluations, and collection of worksite assessments for SYEP participants
  • Create referrals to appropriate support services to assist youth with barriers that are interfering with their employment or overall wellbeing
  • Track retention rates by identifying changing patterns in youth participation and identifying problems and solutions to re-engage youth
  • Mentor participants to resolve work-based conflict while developing social-emotional strategies within the workplace
  • Conduct internal audits to assure document retrieval and filing are in accordance with UAU and DYCD requirements and standards
  • Attend SYEP team meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities as applicable to role
  • Assist with any other related advisory and/or departmental duties and projects as needed

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED required, Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • 2+ years of experience in youth services or education capacity, preferred
  • Must be willing and able to work both in-person and remotely
  • Strong working knowledge using Microsoft Excel/Word/PowerPoint and the GSuite platforms
  • Willing and able to take initiative and allow for a flexible work schedule; including some nights and occasional weekends
  • Strong problem solving skills and ability to thoughtfully and accurately assess and respond to individual needs
  • Excels working in a teamwork based environment to achieve objectives and outcomes while demonstrating the ability to work independently
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and values individuals’ different capacities, cultures, and abilities
  • Respect for diverse racial, socio-economic, ethnic, academic, religious, and cultural backgrounds and identities

  • Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need.
  • Standard office equipment including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, etc.
  • Position is in a well-lighted office environment.
  • Involves sitting approximately 80% percent of the day, walking or standing the remainder.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for at least 50% of the time.
  • May include travel to a variety of locations, based on programming needs. Which is reimbursed in accordance with UAU’s fiscal policies and procedures
  • May include working prolonged periods of time sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • The ability to observe details at close range (within a few feet or more of the observer).
