ES C R I P T I O N OF WORK: The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) is seeking applicants for a Conservation Biologist II (working title: “Wildlife District Biologist – District 5”) for our Wildlife Management Division. The NCWRC’s Mission Statement is to conserve North Carolina’s wildlife resources and their habitats and provide programs and opportunities that allow hunters, anglers, boaters, and other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy wildlife-associated recreation. The NCWRC is the regulatory agency responsible for the enforcement of N.C. fishing, hunting, trapping, and boating laws. The NCWRC employs 650 full-time staff across the state, including wildlife and fisheries biologists and technicians, wildlife law enforcement officers, wildlife educators, communication specialists, customer service, information technology, and administrative professionals.

The NC Wildlife Resources Commission’s Wildlife Management Division manages, conserves, enhances, and restores the State’s wildlife populations in a manner assuring a diverse wildlife resource for future generations of North Carolinians. The Division develops and administers programs for the management and wise use of our wildlife resources establishing recommendations for regulated take of certain wildlife species when appropriate. They provide information to assist in resolving human-wildlife interactions when necessary. They monitor the health and status of wildlife and wildlife populations across genera and provide technical guidance to landowners wanting to manage wildlife and wildlife habitats on their lands.


The Conservation Biologist II / Wildlife District Biologist is responsible for coordinating the management of the wildlife resources in NC Wildlife Resources Commission (WRC) District 5, which includes which includes Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Durham, Guilford, Granville, Lee, Orange, Person, Randolph and Rockingham counties in the Northern Piedmont area of the State.

The position will provide assistance as needed within the WRC Northern Piedmont Region and statewide. The position provides technical guidance related to wildlife species to private individuals, governmental agencies, NGOs, and other constituents as appropriate. Duties include implementation and interpretation of biological surveys and monitoring projects, the handling of live and dead wildlife, development and review of hunting regulations and participation in compliance inspections for multiple agency permit programs. The employee may use immobilization drugs or other techniques to restrain, capture and/or handle live animals. The employee must conduct wildlife disease/mortality investigations, including field necropsies. The employee will prepare and present wildlife programs to a variety of audiences and must have excellent oral and written communication skills.

The Wildlife District Biologist may train and supervise 1-3 temporary technicians at any given time working on specific projects and will recruit and train volunteers and participants from other state and federal agencies and organizations to help with surveys, management, and disease surveillance. The individual in this position will also examine management implications relative to population dynamics and status so regulations, conservation programs, and associated policies may be based on sound and reliable data.

This is a full time, permanent home office position which requires frequent daily travel with occasional overnight stays. This position is in NC Wildlife Resources Commission District 5 located in the Northern Piedmont part of North Carolina. To ensure coverage of the entire district, this home-office-based position will be located in Alamance or Orange County. Options for living outside of these counties will be discussed during the interview. A normal Monday-Friday 8am-5pm schedule is associated with this position, though night works, overnight travel and weekend work may be required on occasion. A state vehicle is provided to perform the duties of this position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Ability to operate GPS and GIS software and hardware.
  • Ability to develop work plans, associated budgets, and meet routine reporting requirements.
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of wildlife management, including knowledge of wildlife habitats, species requirements and wildlife population management techniques.
  • Application to coordinate and collaborate with in-state, out-of-state, and international organizations, agencies and individuals.

MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:
Management prefers applicants with at least three years’ experience in wildlife or habitat management. Preferred applicant will have a Wildlife Biologist certification by The Wildlife Society or possess the qualifications to become certified. Ability to function independently for work planning, scheduling, procurement, and personnel management is also preferred.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in wildlife or fisheries management, fisheries science, zoology, or a biological science, or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS: Individual in this position must have a valid North Carolina driver’s license; or be able to obtain one within 90 days of hire. Individual must maintain an acceptable driving record. Must meet the applicable education, employment, and training standards as required by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. The position requires the ability to think analytically and possess strong problem-solving skills.
