DICKINSON STATE UNIVERSITY (DSU) is a regional comprehensive institution within the North Dakota University System, whose primary role is to contribute to intellectual, social, economic, and cultural development, especially to Southwestern North Dakota. The University’s mission is to provide high quality, accessible programs; to promote excellence in teaching and learning; to support scholarly and creative activities; and to provide service relevant to the economy, health, and quality of life for the citizens of the State of North Dakota.


DSU is seeking to hire a Vice President. This position is one of the two chief academic officers of the university. For one of the two colleges at the university, the Vice President will serve as the head of the college (in a manner similar to a dean at other institutions), with the Provost serving as the approver. For the other college, the Provost will serve as the head of the college, with the Vice President serving as the approver. Thus, the Vice President will be responsible for planning, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of all academic programs, and for all matters pertaining to faculty appointment, retention, and evaluation within one of the two colleges at the university. The position serves on the President’s Cabinet. The Vice President also supervises the Admissions (i.e., student recruiting) and University Relations departments. Also, the Vice President is expected to perform the duties of positions in the direct supervisory chain that are unoccupied.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:

  • Terminal degree from a regionally accredited university
  • Record of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service, or similar experience
  • Minimum of three (3) years of educational administrative experience or similar experience
  • Experience developing, planning, implementing, and evaluating instructional programs and services
  • Demonstrated experience with accreditation and/or continuous improvement process, or similar matters
  • Proven success in growing programs
  • Commitment to student success
  • Demonstrated effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of audiences
  • Substantial experience in formulating and implementing budgets


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/COMPETENCIES:

  • Successful experience managing or working in Admissions (i.e., recruiting), University Relations (i.e. public relations), honors programs, and/or Title IX.
  • Experience and familiarity with DSU and the North Dakota University System, including relevant policies, procedures, and other regulations
  • Demonstrated commitment to DSU
  • Experience in central administration in education
  • Experience with instructional or similar technologies
  • Experience developing, planning, implementing, and evaluating career and technical education, workforce training, and non-credit producing programs
  • Proven record of innovation in higher education, including overcoming resistance to change
  • Demonstrated record of enrollment growth in competitive higher education environment


COMPENSATION PACKAGE:

  • Salary range of $132,000 to 138,000/annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:

Responsible for academic planning and improvement, including advancement of teaching and learning, within one college and as approver for the other college.

  • Support accreditation, curriculum reviews, new curriculum approval processes, institutional improvement process, and evaluation functions.
  • Develop and approve all curricular changes and programs.
  • Oversee preparation of Stage I and II program approval requests for the State Board of Higher Education (SBHE).
  • Oversee development and maintenance of course listings and program requirements.
  • Develop and maintain academic policies and procedures.
  • Encourage the development and use of a broad range of teaching and learning strategies and new technologies related to the access and delivery of programs and services.
  • Provide oversight for distance delivery of courses and programs, including staff at DSU-Bismarck and DSU-Williston.
  • Interact effectively with diverse students, staff, faculty and administrators, individually and as team members.
  • Be familiar with, interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Oversee Admissions (i.e., student recruiting), University Relations, and assigned academic support areas from an operational standpoint.

  • Coordinate the hiring, support, development and evaluation of faculty, staff, and administration of instructional programs and services.
  • Provide management oversight for the academic departments within college of primary responsibility, Admissions, University Relations, and assigned academic support areas
  • Work collaboratively across units, divisions and constituent groups of the DSU and Dickinson community at large.
  • Advance collaboration, consensus building, conflict resolution, and problem solving among and across the academic units.
  • Work to maintain effective and positive relationships with faculty and staff.
  • Be familiar with and encourage resource development through grant applications, collaboration with the DSU Heritage Foundation, or similar development activities.
  • Provide leadership for ensuring that the University has effective student recruiting and public relations.
  • Represent the University to various external entities and with outside agencies in matters relating to Vice President’s assigned responsibilities.


Provide leadership oversight and direction to one of the two colleges and departments/schools within, regarding curriculum related matters, development and review, and course scheduling.

  • Help department/school chairs develop new major/minor programs including working on proposals (Stage I and II requests) for NDUS and SBHE approval;
  • Advise and review new courses developed by departments/school chairs and support screening and routing for Curriculum Council consideration;
  • Review, edit and update the sections of the Catalog dealing with the College and its departments/schools;
  • Help department/school chairs develop semester course schedules (including summer session) and approve for Academic Records;
  • Lead oversight coordination, communication, review, and approval of Dual Credit course offerings;
  • Leadership oversight and authorship (updating) of the Adjunct Faculty Handbook;
  • Work with department chairs on program reaccreditation.


Engage strategic leadership vision, planning, management and advocacy of the College, and engage special project work as needed and assigned.

  • Serve as a member of the President’s Cabinet;
  • Serve as a member of the Provost/VP senior leadership team;
  • Serve as a member of the AA Council;
  • Serve on University, College and/or Department committees, task forces, etc. as needed and assigned;
  • Assist with HLC reaccreditation;
  • Work with other special projects as assigned;


Develop, manage, and administer instructional budgets in college of primary responsibility and oversee budgeting for other areas of responsibility.

  • Develop and monitor the academic affairs, academic support and general instructional budgets.


Serve on University and North Dakota University System (NDUS) Committees and Councils

  • Serve as member of the President’s Cabinet and Officer of the Institution.
  • Act as CEO in the President’s absence.
  • Preside over the DSU Academic Affairs Council; prepare agendas, moderate meetings and record minutes.
  • Serve as the chair of the Strategic Enrollment Committee.
  • With the Provost, serve as a member of the NDUS Academic Affairs Council.
  • With the Provost, serve as a member of various committees within the University or System on an ad-hoc basis as needed.
