This is a temporary position that will last two (2) years. Academic Year 2023-2024 & Academic Year 2024-2025Position Summary:

Position Summary:
Seeking professionals working in the automation and control technician field for this multi-faceted position. Our Mechatronics instructors utilize their expertise in industry to tie several areas of the advanced manufacturing department together. The instructor will be responsible for developing course materials from several disciplines depending on background. These specialties include automation, robotics, industrial electronics, control systems, fluid power, pneumatics, and computerized machining (CNC). Working with other department faculty as a team, the instructor will be required to keep programs in line with up and coming industry standards. Updating courses with future technology using our continual improvement curriculum process. This position is not a theory only position and will instruct students in the appropriate listed disciplines using a hands-on platform as the center for teaching. The Mechatronics Instructor will ensure WCC’s mechatronics and advanced manufacturing programs are delivered with the highest level of rigor. Seeking instructors with a principle background in automation with at least one other strong area of focus.

Areas of Focus and Development

  • PLC Programmable Logic Controllers (Siemens, Allen Bradley, Rockwell, etc.)
  • Integration of devices into automated systems
  • Troubleshooting of automated systems
  • Electricity / Electronics theory, circuit construction, and troubleshooting.
  • Automated system networks
  • Servo motors, stepper motors, and controls
  • Variable frequency drives
  • Advanced motion control systems
  • Programming logic using python, Arduino, or platforms.

Secondary Areas of Focus and Development

  • Programming and operation of robots from multiple manufactures (Fanuc, ABB)
  • Numerical control programming, setup, and operation.
  • Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing software.
  • Fluid power – Pneumatics
  • Fluid power – Hydraulics

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide individualized instruction on including but not limited to fundamental and advanced manufacturing processes.
  • Present lectures and conduct discussions to increase student’s knowledge and competence of subject matter.
  • Connect subject matter with related fields so that students get a feel for real world applications.
  • Educate students in safe work practice application when performing processes in the lab.
  • Supervise and monitor student’s use of equipment to help ensure safe work practices are always being executed.
  • Utilize the latest technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience.
  • Collaborate with department in the planning and development of course curriculum, for both current and future offerings, to keep our program aligned with industry and ahead of the curve.
  • Collaborate with department on updating of any course material (syllabi, objectives, etc.), to keep courses and offerings fresh and aligned with industry and on the cutting edge wherever possible.
  • Participate in department meetings and program advisory committee meetings
  • Maintain technical knowledge of the mechatronics field through active participation in professional development organizations, events, seminars, training, etc., and integrate relevant information into program.
  • Experience with unions and apprenticeships preferred.
  • Must be able to teach online course content.
  • Participate in college events, which may fall outside a faculty’s schedule, that promote our program and the college, such as; recruiting events, campus tours organized by the college, open houses and competitions sponsored by the department, etc.
  • Related Mechatronic experience with programming
  • Advise students on registration, course selections, career decisions and other academic and vocational concerns.
  • Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to student’s needs and circumstances.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of student progress and submit final grade rosters each semester in accordance with college policy and FERPA.
  • Must work with Industry to maintain one on one relationships
  • Post and maintain regular office hours to ensure accessibility to colleagues and students for advisement and consultation.
  • Coordinate and direct students in the electronics specialties. Lead initiatives in advancing the advanced manufacturing department.
  • Must advise students, program management, curriculum & assessment and perform professional duties
  • Teach online course content.
  • Assist with hiring and oversee/direct part-time staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Hours/Schedule:
Hours vary based on class schedules—days, nights and weekends. The schedule is unique from general industry and changes each semester based on student need.

Professional Instructors shall be responsible for a total of 450 contact hours per academic year. Each instructor is expected to be on campus at least four (4) days per week. If more than 25% of an Instructor’s base load contact hours are taught online, the Instructor is expected to be on campus for a minimum of three (3) days per week.

All professional instructors have a year-round professional responsibility to the College. The professional instructor’s base load responsibilities shall consist of (1) teaching/teaching preparation; (2) development and review (including curriculum, teaching methods, learning technologies); (3) department and institutional work (such as student outcomes assessment, curricular improvement), (4) student recruitment and student guidance, and (5) professional development.

Professional faculty positions are 40 hour per week positions that consist of the following:

Base Load Assignment for Full Time Professional Faculty
Professional instructors will hold a minimum of five (5) office hours per week 5
Professional instructors shall be available for five (5) hours per week for meetings 5
Professional instructors shall be accountable for fifteen (15) preparation hours per week 15
Professional instructor shall be accountable for fifteen (15) hours of classroom instruction per week 15
Professional Faculty – 40 hour work week 40

Physical Demands:

  • Move about 2/3 of the time and be stationary about 1/3 of the time.
  • Lift and move objects of 50 pounds.
  • Operate machinery in a manufacturing environment.
  • Tolerate frequent exposure to fluids and noise which are common to the industry.

Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Earned Bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution in a department related field required. This includes, Mechatronics, Electrical, and Robotics, Minimum 5 years full-time work experience required. An associate degree in a department related field may be considered with a minimum of 7 years full-time work experience.
  • Must have computer skills and experience with software products
  • Must have the ability to perform curriculum and assessment work.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a team towards common department student-centered goals.
  • Demonstrated high level of the following skills—project management, technology, and organizational.
  • Demonstrated positive management style and the ability to communicate effectively with college stakeholders.
  • Available to instruct days, nights, weekends, and available year-round for events, college business, etc.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Recent, successful, post-secondary teaching experience in Mechatronic and Advanced Manufacturing related courses.
  • Online, remote, or virtual teaching experience.
  • QM Teaching Online certified.
  • Relevant industry certifications.
  • Program Management.
  • Experience with unions and apprenticeships preferred.

Salary: $64,106 - $84,477 for the 2023-2024 Academic Year starting August 2023
