Overview:

Provides patient flow, rooming, assisting patients and assisting physicians. Specific skills needed include cast application and removal, setting up and removal of traction, suture removal, pin extraction, adjustment of braces and external fixation devices, measuring and application of brace devices

High school plus specialized, short-term training in clinical medical skills. Certified Orthopedic Technician designation or Certified Orthopedic Allied Professional designation required. Current CPR certification required. One to three years experience in ambulatory care

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities:
  • Assigns and assists with patient preparation/rooming patients.

  • Cast application and removal

  • Set up and removal of traction

  • Suture removal & pin extraction

  • Adjusts braces and external fixation devices

  • Measures and applies brace devices (knee, elbow, ankle, Pavlik Harness, Bebax shoes)

  • Wound cleansing and dressing application.

  • Sets up, prepares and assistance in joint aspirations or joint injections

  • Collects and processes specimens

  • Completes patient documentation and encounter forms

  • Answers patient and family questions and provides other education ordered by physician.

  • Provides patient with home going instructions which may include dressing changes, exercise and crutch or walker training.

  • Documents on medical record within scope of practice.

  • Interacts effectively with customers, providing instructions and information, both written and verbal, as appropriate.

  • Maintains established practice policies and procedures, objectives, quality program, safety, environment and infection control standards.

  • Seeks help, communicates and cooperates with Medical Provider and team appropriately.

  • Other responsibilities include requesting and obtaining x-rays and lab reports for physician review, maintaining supplies and patient equipment, assisting with patient scheduling, ordering orthopaedic supplies, braces, dressings and cast material, keeping patient rooms stocked, contacting specialty brace companies and storage of supplies and cleaning instruments
