The selected candidate will provide System Safety Engineering support for the Human Landing Systems (HLS) Program at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) within the Safety and Mission Assurance Support Services Contract at NASA MSFC in Huntsville Alabama.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate with Engineering and the Commercial Providers on the identification.
  • Assist the NASA customer in assessing adequacy of various system safety analysis products associated with Human Landing Systems designs and operations.
  • Develop and present results of system safety assessments and related documents to the HLS Program Office and Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) Directorate management during development milestones reviews, Safety and Engineering Review Panels (SERPs) and other technical and SMA reviews in support of flight readiness and certification.
  • Provide for insight into Commercial Provider Design, Development, Test, and Evaluation (DDT&E) activities.
  • Assess acceptability of Commercial Provider-developed System Safety Program Plans (SSPP) and hazard analyses to assure that: (a) all hazards are identified, and the associated risks properly characterized; (b) hazard controls satisfy safety requirements and mitigate safety risks; (c) safety verification requirements are clearly identified, including the clear definition of verification pass/fail criteria; and (d) the safety verification status is maintained in a closed loop accounting system.
  • Assess HLS Program documentation (e.g., Statement of Work, Data Requirements Documents, System Requirements Document, design analysis, Requirements Verification Compliance procedures) to assure that all safety requirements are addressed in compliance with Government requirements.
  • Assess proposed changes to HLS Program documentation to assure compliance with design requirements. This assessment includes evaluation of the impacts to safety and hazard analyses and the effects on program or project risk.
  • Evaluate and provide recommendations for acceptance of Non-compliance Reports, Variances, and Requests for Waiver/Deviations.
  • Track to closure all System Safety Analysis Report (SSAR) review comments, safety and engineering review panel Action Items and Agreements.
  • Track and/or monitor the implementation and validation of hazard controls in accordance with approved hazard reports and verification plans.
  • Develop and present status reports to upper management during various program management reviews such as Certificate of Flight Readiness Review (COFR) and Flight Readiness Review (FRR).
  • Other duties as assigned.


REQUIRED:

  • This position requires US Citizenship due to the sensitivity of customer related information.
  • Must have a bachelor's degree in the field of engineering, or a related field.
  • Must have 5+ years of recent and related work experience.
  • Must possess demonstrable experience in the identification and documentation of hazards, hazard controls, and proposing methods of verification/validation. Further, extensive experience in the performance of Fault Tree Analysis, Functional Failure Analysis (FFA), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, and/or similar types of system safety engineering analysis.
  • Prior experience in the use of System Safety software analysis tools such as CAFTA, Saphire, or similar software analysis tools.
  • Proficient in the challenges, technologies and historical system solutions endemic to the space environment and have knowledge in several subject areas such as propulsion, fluids, avionics, thermal management, Software, GN&C, and Natural Environments.


DESIRED:

  • Skilled in working with both contractor and NASA senior level engineering and Program/Project Managers in a professional manner and able to communicate complex safety and engineering issues in an understandable and diplomatic manner.
  • Prior experience with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) processes and procedures is highly desired.


WORK LOCATION:

  • This position offers a hybrid work schedule.
  • The onsite office is located onsite at Marshall Spaceflight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville Alabama.
  • This position offers a 9/80 schedule, every other Friday off

  • Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time).
  • May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).


ATTENDANCE:

  • Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical.
  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.


BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS REQUIRED:

DRUG AND ALCOHOL SCREENING REQUIRED:
