Overview:

M Health Services is now taking applications for our Surgical Tech Apprentice program! Do you want to be part of the largest health care organization in MN? Are you highly motivated and interested in working in the Operating Room? Come join our team!


Location: TBD at one of our hospitals

FTE: You will be working at the University of MN East Bank 24 hours a week and attending school at Rasmussen University in Brooklyn Park 2 days a week

Length: The program is 21 months

Start Date: April 3rd, 2023

Pay: $20.00 an hour, increases as you advance

Testing: Passing score of 48% on TEAS test


Apprentices are responsible for their tuition bills and for pursing the benefits associated with the program that are crafted to help offset the cost of education expenses:

Organization funds – Surg Tech Apprentices are eligible for $4,500 in funds to assist with offsetting education expenses 90 days after their start date/being registered as an Apprentice.

  • Discount - Rasmussen offers a 20 percent discount on tuition as a M Health Fairview employee.
  • Tuition reimbursement – M Health Fairview has a tuition reimbursement program that offers benefit eligible employees’ funds to offset the costs of tuition ($5,250 per year).
Responsibilities/Job Description:

In the Surgical Technologist Apprentice role, we perform Surgical Technologist duties while studying toward a AAS degree, within limits of current training; work is guided and overseen by a Patient Care Supervisor at the assigned hospital location. This will include the following:

  • Work in a collaborative environment to deliver excellent patient care under the direction of a RN.
  • Will be considered a team member and will be able to facilitate and or shadow some (within limits of current training) aspects of a surgical technologist as a scrub person during surgical procedures providing patient care services appropriate to the age of the patients (ages pediatric through geriatric) served during the shift of duty in collaboration with the RN.
  • Will shadow the Surgeon and Advanced Practice Professional with procedures and treatments as trained and directed.
  • Responsible for adhering to standards of nursing practice and patient care, accurate use of supplies/equipment and maintenance of the surgical suite

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Upon job offer, be eligible for admission/enrollment in the Surgical Technologist program at Rasmussen University
  • Be able to attend college and work in our apprentice position
  • Proof of enrollment may be requested.
  • BLS certification through American Red Cross or American Heart Association upon completion of the apprenticeship program.
  • Basic customer service skills, clinical skills, and computer skills.


Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, prior healthcare experience, preferably as a instrument tech, LPN, nursing assistant or other closely related field.
  • Excellent customer service and communication.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Some college course work
  • Health care experience


Apprentices maintain full time enrollment and passing grades and intend to continue employment at Fairview Health Services.
