We are currently looking for individuals to fill Summer Camp positions at Camp La Jita. Camp La Jita meaning “precious possession” was aptly chosen as the name for our resident camp on the beautiful Sabinal River near Utopia, Texas. Camp La Jita rests on 236 acres of Texas Hill Country land, one hour and twenty minutes west of San Antonio.

Lifeguard

Reports to: Waterfront Director

Purpose: Lifeguards assist in carrying out a program of waterfront activities consistent with Girl Scout standards and the American Red Cross.

Equipment Used: Junior Olympic pool and maintenance equipment, canoes, kayaks, riverfront, lifeguard tubes, fishing poles, life jackets

Essential Functions:

  • Outlines and enforces waterfront safety measures for every person in camp.
  • Assists in teaching swimming, diving, canoeing, lifesaving and water safety.
  • Sees to care of lifesaving equipment, all waterfront equipment, pool shower house, pool filtration system, facilities and supplies. Reports repairs as needed to the Waterfront director.
  • Participates in general camp program outside his/her own field (i.e. unit responsibilities, program activities) as assigned by Camp Director through the Waterfront Director.
  • Takes responsibility for proper operation and cleanliness of the pool and shower house as assigned by the Waterfront Director.
  • Follows National and Council Policies, procedures and plans.
  • Attends weekly staff meetings.
  • Participates in all camp activities.
  • Acts as host/hostess for camp visitors and parents.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Previously certified, or able to obtain certification in Lifeguarding and CPR pro through American Red Cross.
  • Previous experience in residential camping preferred.
  • Attend training sessions for the position June 5, 2023 – June 9, 2023
  • Must reside at camp June 11, 2023 – August 5, 2023 (some weekends are required with alternate days off)
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and reliable means of transportation.
  • Prior experience in the development and delivery of recreational programs preferred.
  • Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  • Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.

Physical and Environmental Demands:

  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Some physical requirements of the position could be endurance including prolonged standing and sitting, some bending, stooping, and stretching.
  • Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate program equipment and activities.
  • Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper and staff activities/programs.
  • Willing to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering program in the facility available.
  • Continuous outdoor activity and exposure to weather (heat, sun, humidity, etc.)
  • Strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers
