Student Nurse Extern Program
Trellis Supportive Care Student Nurse Extern program provides a paid experience to rising senior nursing students in an accredited BSN program the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a hospice homecare setting.

Nursing students will work as a paid Nursing Assistant (NA) with an experienced RN preceptor for 3 or 4 shifts per week. Externs also have the opportunity attend a weekly Interdisciplinary Team Meetings for observation and learning purposes. Participating students must be in an accredited BSN program with an NA certification by May 15, 2023.
Program dates will start on June 5, 2023 or shortly thereafter, and run up to 10 weeks. Specifics on orientation will be available closer to externship start date.
Clinical Opportunity
Hospice Homecare (Winston-Salem, Salisbury, Mocksville or Walnut Cove)
- Extern will work four 8-hour days with assigned RN preceptor 3-4 days per week. Typical day will be 8a-5p, but may vary slightly.
Qualifications
- Must be a rising Senior in an accredited BSN program
- Must be listed as an NA I with the North Carolina Nurse Aide Registry by May 15, 2023
- Must be able to work the schedule of assigned RN preceptor
- If selected for an interview, a copy of your college transcript (official or unofficial) will be requested
- If selected for an interview, 2 instructor references will be required
- If selected for an interview, proof of NA certification will be required prior to starting the Externship
- Covid-19 vaccination required (unless an approved religious or medical accommodation)
After the Externship
After completing the program, you have the option to stay on as a PRN Hospice Aide for Trellis. Following graduation as a BSN and obtaining your NC license as a Registered Nurse, you may also be eligible for priority employment with Trellis Supportive Care.
