Purpose of Position

Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within two (2) weeks of closing date.

Why does the job exist?

The position is responsible for the Traffic Safety Division alcohol enforcement program and other traffic safety programs within the division. The position primarily has oversight of state and federally funded alcohol programs and other traffic safety programs as needed. In addition, the position is required to supervise, direct, and follow-up on work assigned to staff, conduct interviews to fill vacant positions, issue job assignments, employee performance, and provide direction. This includes any staff trainings, program oversight, budget, and stewardship of state and federal programs to ensure data-drive projects are implemented. The position is responsible for creating and evaluating programs and grants to ensure effectiveness and proper outcomes that impact injury and death rates. In addition, quality programs and promote traffic safety through various activities related to drivers education, graduated licensing, texting and driving, seatbelt, child passenger safety, speeding, media, motorcycle awareness, pedestrian, and other traffic safety issues as determined. Actively participate in the Highway Safety Plan process and other related grants or applications and the collection, analyzing, and reporting of data that may impact the above-named programs.

How does it get done?

Manage and provide support to the Impaired Driving Section of the Traffic Safety Division. Improve the overall fatality rate for New Mexico by implementing appropriate programs using the appropriate funding source.

Who are the customers?

Law enforcement agencies, state, county and city municipalities, state of New Mexico Government agencies, NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), FHWA (Federal Highway Administration), grantees, sub-grantees, contractors, and miscellaneous suppliers.

  • Communicate effectively with internal and external partners.
  • Carry a very high work load and meet stringent deadlines.
  • Applicant should also be well versed in researching and reconciling high volume data.

Minimum Qualification

A Bachelor's Degree in any field of study from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of professional level experience operating within parameters and guidelines directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment. Any required licensure, certification or registration shall be defined at the time of recruitment and will be in addition to the above requirements.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage.
