Job description

RES is currently accepting applications for the position of a Sr. Engineer – Design Task Lead for the Klamath Project based out of the Yreka, CA or Ashland, OR area.

The mission: be part of an epic project!

RES is leading a massive restoration effort integral to the largest dam removal and river renewal project in US history – a task vital to the future of several imperiled salmon populations on the West Coast. The Klamath River and its tributaries were once home to the third-largest salmon population in the West, but those numbers have crashed to an alarming level. A major ecological restoration project will follow the removal of four aging dams that have cut off access to more than 400 stream miles of historical salmon and steelhead habitat. The world is watching, with major media outlets like the BBC and National Geographic already covering this critical project.

If you want to be part of this truly historic effort, we want to meet you.

You will be part of a highly cohesive team that values commitment to quality management, continuous improvement, initiative and problem-solving skills, and client satisfaction. The ability to communicate and coordinate within multi-disciplinary teams will ensure your success.

What your day-to-day might look like?

This position will report daily to the Klamath Field Office or Lower Klamath Project. You will lead restoration design tasks, perform construction oversight, and design data collection, therefore prior experience as a field crew leader will support your application. Note that the work is done in outdoor environments, including prolonged walking, or standing on various terrain in a wide range of weather conditions.

In the field, you will review the field conditions and provide real-time fit input on the reasonableness of design documents. You will then document field-fit design deviations and adjustments. Ability to evaluate design discharge, channel cross-section, profile, and planform, interpret results from H&H models, and understand the use of regional regressions, regional curves, and reference data in stream restoration design is required.

You also will perform as-built restoration surveys and develop as-built drawings and lead geomorphic monitoring activities for post-restoration construction according to the field monitoring compliance protocols that you will create, and then report on these activities.

To perform these duties, you need to be able to read and interpret ecological restoration construction plans and have extensive experience with stream restoration and water resources engineering, and knowledge of stream ecology, biology, and geomorphology, as well as watershed hydrology, physicochemical processes, stream geomorphology and hydraulics, aquatic ecology, and sediment transport.

You will also ensure that the restoration design is compliant with regulatory and permit requirements and provide technical input for compliance reports.

Qualifications

We would love to talk to you if you have many of the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 5 years+ experience in a natural resources design field (such as but not limited to: landscape architecture, civil engineering, environmental engineering, biological systems engineering, agricultural engineering, or water resources engineering).
  • PE or PG license in the States of California and Oregon.
  • Knowledge of, and operational proficiency with, AutoCAD/AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation; TR-55, HEC-RAS/HMS, XPSWMM and GIS.
  • Experience reviewing and summarizing geomorphic monitoring data and developing monitoring reports.

What will make you stand out?

  • Advanced Degree.
  • Experience with dam removal restoration projects.
  • Modeling of riverine systems and floodplains in support of impact assessment and environmental permitting including FEMA CLOMR, LOMR, etc.
  • 2-dimensional hydraulic modeling.
  • Stormwater BMP design.
