School Social Worker Job Description


General Definition of Work

Through knowledge of human behavior, social systems and social work skills, promotes
maximum development of all students by prevention and alleviation of problems that interfere
with the tasks of learning.


Education and Experience Qualifications

? Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from a CSW accredited university.
? NCDPI licensure in Social Work, Counseling, or a related teaching area.
? Must be eligible for or possess a state Social Worker Certification.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

? Extensive knowledge of human behavior, social systems and social work skills.
? General knowledge of the principles of organization and administration.
? General knowledge of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
? Skill in counseling and motivating students and talking with parents.
? Ability to manage culturally sensitive topics.
? Ability to coordinate the efforts of support services personnel and outside agencies.
? Ability to maintain complete and accurate records and statistics and to develop
meaningful reports from that information, and to keep in confidence all personal and/or
student records and information.


Essential Functions

? Intervenes, using social work methods, in situations affecting student educational
progress.
? Assesses school and community needs.
? Provides student mental health counseling, interventions, and crisis intervention services.
? Assists families with interpretation of school policies and procedures.
? Provides appropriate services/referrals for homeless families.
? Works with students and families to identify steps that promote school attendance.
? Investigates, as prescribed by law, violators of the compulsory attendance law.
? Strengthens home, school, and community connections by identifying essential
components to create positive learning environments for students.
? Participates in case conferences with student services personnel.
? Attends weekly Behavior Support Team meetings.
? Implements appropriate programs, groups and initiatives that target at-risk populations.

? Plans individual school and system-wide programs to promote a positive and caring
climate.
? Ensures students’ educational, social, emotional, and physical needs are met in
accordance with established laws and regulations.
? Utilizes skills that respect issues of cultural and ethnic diversity and equity for every
student and family.
? Addresses child abuse and neglect, family functioning, parent involvement, and school
attendance.
? Determines how community resources may be beneficial to students, families, and
families’ involvement in the academic process and fosters connections to useful
resources.
? Fosters collaborative relationships with students and families, staff, administrators, and
staffs of community agencies.
? Adheres to the values and ethics of the social work profession.
? Organizes time and workload to meet the needs of students in assigned schools.
? Maintains accurate case records and documentation.
? Participates in SBMH professional development.
? Understands and practices in accordance with federal, state, and local laws and policies
that relate to students and families.
? Performs other professional responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
