We are now recruiting an experienced Scientist with knowledge, animal research experience and in vivo technical skills in cardiovascular disease, especially in the disease areas of heart failure, cardiomyopathies, pulmonary hypertension, and/or cardiac regeneration to join Bioscience Cardiovascular department within the Early Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (eCVRM) therapeutic area at AstraZeneca in Gaithersburg, Maryland. It is a unique opportunity for a scientist who want to explore the career in early drug discovery in pharmaceutical industry.

The successful candidate should have hands-on in vivo pharmacology experience, particularly in rodent models of cardiovascular diseases, heart failure and cardiomyopathies. Expertise in working with rodent ex vivo lab techniques including blood cells panel, biomarker, tissue gene expression, ELISAs, western blot analysis etc. is required. The successful candidate will be greatly involved with experimental work, including the design, execution and interpretation of preclinical experimental data. Additionally, the candidate will present results to CVRM group and project team meetings. The ability to work well in a team environment, and to interact with departments outside of CVRM is essential for this position.

Summary of the Group

In the Bioscience Cardiovascular department within Early CVRM, we focus on identifying and validating new drug targets for patients with cardiovascular disease and heart failure as well as evaluating pharmacological aspects, e.g. efficacy, target related pharmacology and mechanism of action, of new compounds crafted to hit these targets. The team delivers key data to projects across all phases of the drug discovery and development, and we work with different modalities such as stem cells, AAV, antibodies, small molecules, modified mRNA, antisense oligonucleotides and peptides.

Requirements:

Education and Experience:

Degree in a biological science field PhD and 1+ years relevant experience or MS and 3+ years of relevant experience or BS and 5+ years of relevant experience

Core responsibilities:

  • Highly proficient in working with rodent models of cardiovascular diseases, heart failure and cardiomyopathies – hands on expertise in animal handling, dosing (SC, IV, PO and IM), and necropsy tissue collections (essential)

  • Support drug discovery studies to deliver novel drugs to treat cardiovascular disease and heart failure. Administration of CVRM therapeutic modalities to CVRM rodent models (essential)

  • Independently execute ex vivo analysis of blood/tissue samples including blood cell panel, qPCR gene expression, western blots, and ELISAs (essential)

  • Design and conduct in vivo studies to support therapeutic drug development in disease models as well as in pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and efficacy studies. Take part in all experimental work, including the design, analysis and interpretation of data from these experiments (essential)

  • Prepare and present scientific data to CVRM in vivo group meetings (essential) and project team meetings (desirable)

  • Work in a cross-functional project team with responsibility of making decisions and recommendations for program in vivo pharmacology plans (essential)

  • Develop an understanding of the scientific basis of the CVRM project pipeline, to be able to successfully execute experiments needed to meet the requirements of the projects involved with (essential)

  • Develop and validate new in vivo cardiovascular and heart failure disease models with comorbidities as required, and implement novel animal models and technologies in the pipeline studies (essential)

  • Experience in surgical procedures desirable

  • Experience in pharmaceutical industry desirable
