Certified Counselor. Full-Time position to begin August 1, 2023. Master’s Degree and School Counseling Certification required. Must be a good team player and be able to work well with administration, teachers and students. Will provide responsive services and character education to students in addition to other services and supports as directed by the principal.

Purpose Statement

The job of School Counselor - Secondary is done for the purposes: of implementing the Utah Comprehensive School Counseling Program based on district goals and objectives; Utah State Board of Education Counseling Program Assurances; the Seven Standards of the Utah Model for Comprehensive Counseling; and the American School Counselor Association’s Ethical Standards for School Counselors. This job is for 205 days.

Essential Functions

  • Adheres to professional and ethical standards outlined by the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) and Nebo School District. for the purpose of providing trained professional counseling services to secondary students.
  • Advocates for equity for all students regardless of economic status or background for the purpose of providing opportunities for educational success to all students.
  • Aligns school schedules with students’ abilities and interests for the purpose of providing an individually- tailored educational program.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of a school’s comprehensive school counseling program. for the purpose of supporting students and families in relation to the student's educational goals.
  • Consults and Collaborates with teachers, staff, and parents to positively address the needs of students for the purpose of aiding them in managing the course of their educational plans.
  • Delivers a school program through College and Career Readiness, individual planning, collaborative classroom curriculum, and responsive services for the purpose of meeting the individual and diverse needs of all students.
  • Enjoys working with students, families, and the school community for the purpose of gaining professional fulfillment and creating a positive and supportive learning environment.
  • Gains knowledge of the school, district, and community resources and programs, and effectively and equitably disseminate information to students, parents, and school staff for the purpose of providing access to supportive community services.
  • Guide and Counsel them through the development of their individual College and Career Readiness Plans (CCR-Plans) for the purpose of preparing them for the next step in their education with an eye toward helping them achieve their life goals.
  • Inputs and analyzes data for program management for the purpose of promoting equitable student access to programs.
  • Interprets achievement, interest, and aptitude assessment data to students and parents for the purpose of identifying gaps in learning and strategizing means to address those gaps.
  • Involves parents in students’ CCR-Planning process for the purpose of involving students' parents in support of their student's goals.
  • Maintains appropriate notes and records in the student information system for the purpose of providing accuracy of services provided as a student transitions from school to school.
  • Organizes time effectively for the purpose of following through on assigned tasks and projects.
  • Participates in the MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Support) process to identify and create interventions for students with critical needs for the purpose of developing life-long habits centered on socially- acceptable responses to life situations.
  • Participates in professional development regularly for the purpose of providing students and families with the most current information about accessing post-secondary opportunities, paying for college, social-emotional learning techniques, and career opportunities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned for the purpose of supporting student learning and creating a positive educational environment.
  • Provides responsive services to students (and families) in crisis for the purpose of supporting them through difficult life situations.
  • Provides accurate information about college and career readiness to students and families for the purpose of helping them set realistic goals and expectations for achievement.
  • Teach curriculum utilizing effective instructional strategies with an emphasis on college and career readiness components for the purpose of helping students plot a post-graduation course toward self-selected goals.


Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

  • SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include strong oral and written communication skills, strong computer and educational technological skills; analyzing data; using pertinent software applications; displaying effective multi-tasking and time-management skills.
  • KNOWLEDGE is required to perform advanced math; understand written procedures, write routine documents, speak clearly; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include age-appropriate activities/behaviors; assessment instruments and techniques; concepts of grammar, spelling, and punctuation; knowledge of community resources; methods of instruction and training; stages of child development.
  • ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes, and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of varied types and/or purposes, and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem-solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem-solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines, and problem-solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; dealing with frequent interruptions; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; working as part of a team; working independently with little direct supervision; accepting responsibility and being self-motivated.


Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; directing other persons within a small work unit; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to significantly impact the organization’s services.


Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and some fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 60% sitting, 20% walking, and 20% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
