Department: Respiratory Therapy

Work Type: Restricted Part Time (Total FTE less than 0. 5)

Shift: Shift 1

Work Schedule: 8 Hr

Summary:
Provides basic respiratory therapy, diagnostics and monitoring to patients of all ages outside the critical care areas.
Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Responsibilities:
Performs assessment (chest auscultation, vital signs, indications for therapy, ABG results, etc.) on assigned patients; demonstrates accurate assessment skills in relation to age of patient.
Establishes priorities and plan of care based on assessment
Provides care according to respiratory standards of practice including nebulizer and inhaler therapies, hygiene and expansion therapies, oxygen therapy, and basic PAP therapy.
Documents tolerance to treatments and patient variances.
Assists Respiratory Therapists in revision of plan of care in accordance with established Respiratory Care department protocols.
Completes all annual educational requirements; demonstrates competency in respiratory areas, including assessment, Oxygen administration, basic treatment modalities, medications, etc.
Reprocesses equipment and readies for next use (cleaning, assembly, function check); restocks emergency boxes and supply areas.
Must demonstrate competencies in assigned responsibilities. Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing.
Assists in cardiopulmonary rehab with vitals and patient exercise equipment.
Gains competency in patient education and basic oxygen therapy.
Other duties as assigned.

Required Job Qualifications:
Current enrollment in a CoARC accredited Respiratory Therapy Program.
Successful completion of first year (two semesters)
Maintains passing grade in all college and clinical classes.
Recommendation from Program and/or Clinical Director.
Current BLS card.
Technical skills are required to adapt equipment and procedures to patient needs.
Analytical skills are required to evaluate patients and their clinical response to therapy.
Customer service skills are required to effectively meet the needs of patients, families, and members of the healthcare team on an almost constant basis.
Preferred Job Qualifications:
Current ACLS and PALS card.
Physical Demands:
Standing, walking, pushing, and bending for 75% of the day.
Must be able to lift 20 pounds in order to handle cylinders.
Must be highly adaptable to respond to changing workloads and priorities.
Above average interpersonal skills are required to provide direction to other staff.
Excellent communication skills are required for communication with colleagues.
