The New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES) is an integral component of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Through its Cooperative Extension offices in all 21 New Jersey counties, dedicated 4-H agents, Extension specialists, Family & Community Health Sciences educators, and Agriculture and Natural Resources agents work to serve New Jersey residents in every area of the state.
As the health and wellness component of Rutgers Cooperative Extension, the Department of Family & Community Health Sciences (FCHS) promotes healthy lifestyles and environments for NJ residents and communities with outreach in food, nutrition, and healthy lifestyles. Recognized nationally for its work, FCHS connects Rutgers University and the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station to communities beyond the campus to build healthy families, schools, and communities. Based locally, in each county, FCHS supports efforts to meet the health and wellness challenges facing communities throughout the state through engaged civic learning, volunteerism, service, community-based research, education, and integrated efforts and partnerships.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education (SNAP-Ed) is a federally funded grant program that supports evidence-based nutrition education and obesity prevention interventions and projects for persons eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) through complementary direct education, multi-level interventions, and community and public health approaches to improve nutrition.

Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Program Associate II (Gloucester County) for the The Department of Family and Community Health Sciences (FCHS). Reporting to the Senior Program Coordinator Supervisor, the successful candidate(s) for this position will provide nutrition education for the SNAP-Ed program in Gloucester County and throughout Region 2 (Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, and Mercer Counties). The goal of the education provided is to help program participants improve their food security; dietary quality; physical activity; and food safety behaviors. The PA II recruits and works with agencies willing to host SNAP-Ed program(s). Further, the PA II is responsible for ensuring compliance with all federal outreach and budget guidelines regarding all activities that occur within the project. The PA II is responsible for various reports designed to document the project’s success. Further, the PA II serves on appropriate boards and councils in the community to maintain a strong presence for the program. The successful candidate serves as a role model for his/her volunteers and always maintains a professional demeanor and confidentiality.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Provides nutrition education for the SNAP-Ed program in Gloucester County and throughout Region 2.
  • Recruits and works with agencies willing to host SNAP-Ed program(s).
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with all federal outreach and budget guidelines regarding all activities that occur within the project.
  • Responsible for various reports designed to document the project’s success.
  • Serves on appropriate boards and councils in the community to maintain a strong presence for the program.
  • Serves as a role model for his/her volunteers and always maintains a professional demeanor and confidentiality.
  • Facilitates policy, systems, and environmental change strategies, using pre-approved curricula, interventions, and evaluation tools under the direction of the supervisor and in accordance with federal, state and University guidelines that govern the SNAP-Ed program.

Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2023. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • A bachelor’s degree in nutrition (preferred), health education, public health, food policy, family and consumer sciences, or related discipline with two years post-baccalaureate experience.

Certifications/Licenses
  • Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver’s license would be required for this position.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities




Preferred Qualifications
  • Nutrition degree preferred.
  • RDN or CHES preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English (read, write, speak) preferred.
  • Experience implementing community health promotion and behavior change programs.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills, and have experience working with diverse groups/clientele.
  • Experience working with limited resource, urban populations preferred.

Equipment Utilized
  • Highly proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher).
  • Comfortable utilizing appliances and kitchen supplies for cooking and food preparation with hands on nutrition education lessons.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Position office Located in Clarksboro, NJ
  • This position must have the ability to carry program materials and supplies, including audio-visual equipment; ability to arrange set-up of class space (move tables and chairs).
  • The individual must successfully complete Rutgers Youth Protection and ServSafe Food Handler Training.

Special Conditions
  • Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends; able to travel statewide and have a valid driver’s license.
  • Clean driving record.
