JOB SUMMARY
A Laboratory Assistant I (Phlebotomist) is responsible for specimen collections in outpatient and inpatient locations. The Laboratory Assistant is expected to manage a high volume of collection requests for routine, timed and emergent needs. Specimen collections will span all ages and competency in age-specific requirements is expected. Knowledge of test requirements and use of electronic tools are necessary. Interpersonal skills with lab staff, registration staff, nurses and physician offices are important.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Job Specific:

  • Demonstrates successful phlebotomy or clerical responsibilities (EF).
  • Organizes and guides specimen processes (EF).
  • Helps to create an organized environment for testing personnel (EF).
  • Routes telephone calls and question to appropriate section (EF).
  • Monitors the tube system in a timely manner.
  • Assists with clerical needs of the Laboratory.
  • Assists with supply orders and stocks inventory.
  • Accepts special assignments and tasks as guided by Laboratory leaders.

Hospital:

  • Adheres to organization-wide and other applicable policies and procedures.
  • Day-to-day performance complies with the hospital’s service excellence behavioral expectations and iCARE values.
  • Performs within the prescribed limits of the hospital’s Ethics, Compliance and Confidentiality Program guidelines.
  • Performs within his/her professional Scope of Practice at all times

Minimum Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School diploma and Phlebotomy certificate or experience
  • 6 months to one (1) year experience in Phlebotomy
  • Proficiency in clerical skills including computer skills, customer service skills, telephone etiquette, knowledge of office equipment, and office procedures
  • Must be able to adapt to a flexible work schedule with frequent interruptions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must possess organization and communication skills.
  • Must have the ability to establish priorities for multifunctional tasks to be handled simultaneously.
  • Effective communication
  • Customer Service skills

PREFERRED:

  • Phlebotomy Certificate
  • Some college or continuing education hours
  • UDS/BAT Certification
  • CPR
