Pay Range is a flat rate of $24.04/hr. +$2.00/hr for weekend shifts.

POSITION SUMMARY

PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Pharm.D. education and outcomes to contribute to the development of a clinical pharmacist responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year 2 (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

The 12-month program is designed to provide residents each year with the knowledge, abilities, experience, attitude, and critical thinking skills necessary to become leaders in integrated health-system pharmacy practice. The program is structured to allow the resident to develop skills in many areas based on ASHP accreditation standards as well as individual need and preference.

The pharmacy residency provides experience in a variety of settings including, direct patient care, informatics, medication safety, and practice management while also allowing flexibility to meet individual preferences. The program is staffed by highly trained and respected clinical practitioners who are allotted dedicated time in their area of practice.

Upon completion of the program, the clinical pharmacist will be ready to apply his or her skills in direct patient care, exhibit excellent decision-making skills, and provide education and leadership in the care of patients.

Resident responsibilities include but are not limited to; prepares IV admixtures, verifies orders, performs medication reconciliation, answers drug information questions, assists in department planning, fills outpatient prescriptions, fills drug orders, assists pharmacist, fills automated dispensing system.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education or Formal Training

Applicants to pharmacy residency program are graduates or candidates for graduation of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited degree program, or one in process of pursuing accreditation. BCH does not accept applicants who have a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Committee (FPGEC) certificate from the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP).

Special Qualifications (Licensure, Registration, etc.)

All residents must be licensed pharmacists in the state of Colorado by October 1st. If the resident is not licensed by October 1st, the resident will be dismissed from the program. The resident may re-apply for the program the following year.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Adheres to all BCH policies and procedures
  • Answers telephone and window.
  • Prepares IVs using aseptic technique.
  • Orders supplies as needed.
  • Fills out-patient prescriptions.
  • Fills automated dispensing machines.
  • Fills other drug orders.
  • Delivers medications to areas.
  • Understands the automated dispensing system.
  • Orders supplies from out-source suppliers.
  • Checks in drug order and puts it away.
  • Understands that people of various ages require different medication doses.
  • Works under the supervision of a registered pharmacist and/or pharmacy residency program director.
  • Works in the anticoagulation clinic
  • The residency program will be the resident’s full-time and primary work commitment for the 12 months of PGY1 program.
  • The resident must achieve all of the program’s required goals and objectives by the end of the residency year.
  • If the resident receives a “Needs Improvement” evaluation on any goal on the Summative Evaluation, the rotation will not be considered successfully completed. The following actions must occur:
    • The preceptor will document the specific activities / assignments that must be completed in order for the resident to successfully complete the rotation. This is to be done simultaneously with the completion of the Summative Evaluation.
    • The resident will acknowledge and sign the above documentation. The assignment(s) must be completed within 15 days of the conclusion of the evaluation process or as decided appropriate per the RPD.
    • If the resident does not agree to the preceptor’s assignment(s), then the issue will be brought to the RAC for a majority vote. The decision of this committee will be final.
  • All elements outlined on the tracking form must be successfully completed as assigned.
  • Major requirements include timely completion of the following:
    • Residency Share Point folder maintained with the following required elements:
      • Outlook monthly calendar of activities
      • Personal goals and objectives
      • Projects and presentations for each rotation
      • All written feedback received on assignments and presentations
      • Self-evaluations (when assigned)
    • Monthly time studies for CMS pass-through dollars
    • Major project (completed and presented) - Residents will be given examples of projects that are available. The resident is encouraged to choose a topic which, besides being an area of interest to the resident, will also contribute to the advancement of pharmacy practice at BCH and affiliated clinics. All research projects will be in compliance with any applicable BCH, IRB, and HIPAA regulations. PGY1 residency projects are typically presented at a regional residency conference and are strongly encouraged to be submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Also, the required research project cannot be used to satisfy the requirement for performance of a Medication Use Evaluation. Residents are also required to participate in the training program, A Structured Program to Guide Residents’ Experience in Research (ASPIRE), which is conducted by Kaiser Permanente. A formal manuscript will be required.
    • Medication Use Evaluation (completed and presented) - Residents will complete one Medication Use Evaluation (MUE). Details of this project will be covered in meetings with the MUE Coordinator. Residents must work with the RPD and the BCH MUE Coordinator when designing and conducting their MUE.
    • Regional Pharmacy Network Poster (completed and presented)
