Overview: Pharmaceutical manufacturing is big business in Ohio. Home to world-class research institutions and hospitals, Columbus has attracted new companies and increasing amounts of venture capital focused on pharmaceutical manufacturing. Demand for manufacturing process technicians is high. To help meet that workforce demand and build education pathways to in-demand careers, Columbus State Community College has launched a new, no-cost, 3-week Pharma Manufacturing Bootcamp.

Prospective employers include Amgen, Abbott, Beauty Park Manufacturers, STAQ Pharma, American Regent, HIKMA and InBev. High growth in this industry has resulted in high demand for workers. Entry-level jobs offer competitive pay and benefits, plus the opportunity to advance with further education.

Program Summary: This three-week, no-cost program will be hosted at Columbus State’s downtown Accelerated Training Center. Get job ready by cultivating the technical and leadership skills you’ll need to move into a rewarding career in pharmaceutical, food, beauty, and personal care product manufacturing.

This program introduces the basics of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). Good Manufacturing Practice are practices that adhere to the most current regulations enforced by relevant agencies, such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. GMP ensures that consumers can access safe, effective products. GMP training is a highly transferable skill, opening the door to jobs in food, beverage, beauty, personal care, agricultural and semiconductor manufacturing.

Program length: Three weeks

Cost: Free tuition and textbooks

Schedule: Classes meet Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Location: Columbus State downtown campus


Salary, Benefits, and Advancement Opportunities: Training is compensated at the rate of $15 per hour paid out in 3 stipends over the course of the program. Average wages for manufacturing process technicians range from $28,000 to $55,000 annually.

What You will learn:

  • How life-saving medicines, vaccines and gene therapies are made.
  • FDA regulations that keep drugs safe for patients, including cleanroom processes.
  • Basic electrical systems, mechanical drives, and pneumatic systems used in manufacturing equipment.
  • How to safely operate, troubleshoot, and perform preventative maintenance on the industrial equipment used to produce pharmaceutical products.
  • Career readiness and workplace skills.
  • Opportunities for continuing your education to grow your career and salary prospects.

Qualifications for Success:

  • Participants will be asked to show a foundational level of readiness in math and reading. This can be shown high school transcript, GED, prior college, ATC/SAT scores, and placement testing. A career educator will walk you through the process or work to ensure you have the resources you need to get ready for the next cohort.
