PRIMARY PURPOSE:

In the absence of permanent custodian, cleans classrooms, offices, restrooms, and hallways, locks doors and secures building, sets up for special school activities and maintains school grounds in good working condition to ensure a safe and healthy environment for students, staff, and community.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:
High School Diploma or GED, preferred
Clear driving record, required
Valid Texas driver’s Class C license, preferred


Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to handle and to use potentially harmful cleaning supplies safely and efficiently, preferred Knowledge of basic techniques of minor repairs of building and grounds maintenance , preferred Ability to read and understand instructions for cleaning, maintenance and safety procedures, preferred


Experience:
One (1) or more years working in custodial services, preferred


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Cleans classrooms, bathrooms, hallways, offices and gyms; sweeps, mops and vacuums floors; dusts and polishes furniture; scrubs, cleans and disinfects toilets and sinks; washes and cleans door glass; inspects and repairs window shades; empties trash containers and pencil sharpeners; monitors and replaces paper products and soap as required; buffs and polishes floors; shampoos carpets; wipes and cleans office equipment; cleans walls, lockers, water fountains; scrapes chewing gum off floors, walls, lockers, chairs and tables.
2. Inspect the building, make minor building repairs as needed and report major repairs and/or safety hazards to the immediate supervisor on appropriate forms.
3. Perform maintenance duties before, during, and after school hours and during school vacations .
4. Assist staff with movement of furniture, supplies and equipment as necessary or as directed by supervisors.
5. Use safe practices in the custodial maintenance of the facility.
6. Comply with safety and hazardous laws and regulations in the performance of his/her job.
7. Follow procedures for opening and closing the building, locking, checking and safeguarding facilities daily.
8. Perform crossing guard duties as assigned.
9. Follow McAllen ISD customer service standards.
10. Perform other duties assigned by immediate supervisor (primary evaluator).

EQUIPMENT USED:

Shop equipment and tools:
Custodial cleaning equipment (scrubber, wet/dry vacuum, burnisher, backpack vacuum, ride/walk behind auto scrubber) and supplies, ladder, scaffold, small hand tools (screwdrivers, wrenches, hammers, sockets, pliers, crimpers, wire cutters, etc.), handsaws, power tools (saw, drill, sander, etc.), torque wrench, drills, grinder, jacks, lift equipment, fire extinguishers


Vehicles and related equipment:
Safety equipment (flares, reflective signs), radio communication equipment

Mental Demands:
Reading; ability to understand verbal and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively; maintain emotional control under stress; ability to handle several projects at the same time with frequent interruptions


Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Ability to frequently lift and carry moderate weights (15-44 pounds), sitting, standing, walking, climbing (stairs, ladder, scaffold, or ramps), balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speech, visual acuity, distinguishing colors, exposure to temperature extremes (hot or cold), exposure to humidity extremes, exposure to noise, exposure to low or intense illumination, exposure to vibration, exposure to microwaves, exposure to biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.), exposure to chemical hazards (asbestos, fumes, vapors, gases, dust, smoke, etc.), exposure to electrical hazards, work outside, prolonged exposure to sunlight, work with hands in water, work around moving object or vehicles, work around machinery with moving parts, work on slippery surfaces, work on uneven surfaces, work alone, work prolonged or irregular hours
