Approximately 12 hours per week
Must be able to work day, evening, and weekend hours including Sundays.

Must be 16 years of age or older to work the evening schedules.

Job summary:
Performs shelving, shelf maintenance, and a variety of other duties related to the organization and retrieval of library materials; works under direct supervision; performs other duties as assigned.

  • Essential Functions:
    1. Accurately shelves materials in appropriate collection area according to established procedures;
    2. Prioritizes and selects carts to be shelved according to branch procedures;
    3. Shifts materials as necessary when shelving;
    4. Shelf-reads materials while shelving and corrects order as necessary;
    5. Shelf-reads assigned area as directed following established schedule;
    6. Maintains neat shelves;
    7. Merchandise materials according to branch procedures;
    8. Locates and processes requested material and routes to appropriate location;
    9. Provides information to patrons regarding location of materials, departments, etc.;
    10. Performs opening and closing activities including emptying bookdrop, and other duties as directed;
    11. Maintains neat library appearance by straightening library departments, checking material for condition, shelving stray material, etc.;
    12. May participate in meetings, teams/committees/workgroups, outreach activities and training opportunities, as appropriate;
    13 .May act as Passport agent and process passport applications; and
    14. Performs other duties as instructed and assigned.


    Education and Experience:
    1. Ninth grade education;
    2. No previous experience required.


    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    1. Working knowledge of the Dewey Decimal system and the basic principles of library organization;
    2. Working knowledge of library circulation guidelines and policies;
    3. Ability to sort materials in alphabetical or numerical order;
    4. Effective communication skills;
    5. Commitment to excellent internal and external customer service;
    6. Familiar with relevant computer equipment and associated software applications;
    7. Keyboarding skills.


    Physical and Environmental Conditions:
    Work regularly demands physical effort in the handling of moderately heavy materials, boxes, carts, or equipment. Regularly pushes and pulls carts weighing as much as 120 pounds; walks and stands on a routine basis for long periods of time; frequently required to stoop, bend, and kneel while shelving.
    The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, and libraries, e.g., use of safe workplace practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations.
