Kleinfelder is seeking qualified on-call paleontological monitor / technician to work on an on-call flex basis. Prior experience monitoring around heavy equipment and conducting paleontological surveys and recovery is preferred. Must be willing to work independently and feel comfortable directing construction crews in the field.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • An undergraduate degree in geology or paleontology is preferable but is less important than documented experience performing paleontological monitoring.
  • Prior paleontological field experience in California is required.
  • Experience should entail paleontological monitoring of construction activities, fossil collection and salvage including plaster casting, preparation of daily and weekly monitoring summaries, and coordination with a Principal Paleontologist.
  • Demonstrated experience showing ability to recognize fossils in a biostratigraphic context and previous experience recovering vertebrate fossils in the field is required.
  • Ability to identify fossils to "Class" or lower taxonomic level in the field.
  • Museum collections experience is preferred, including matrix sorting, fossil preparation and collections management.
  • Previous approval on BLM State Paleontological Resources Permits preferred but not required.
  • The ability to measure stratigraphic sections and describe sedimentary rocks is highly desirable.
  • The ability to travel to various project sites throughout California for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of time on uneven terrain and in hot and cold weather.
  • Ability to perform bending, kneeling, standing, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 30 lbs.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and attention to detail.
  • Strong writing skills and clarity in notetaking.
  • Experience with MS Office.
  • This position requires some desktop research and writing under direction of Principal Paleontologist.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and respond quickly while working in the field.
  • Experience working on state and federal lands.
  • Familiarity with digital field technology (GPS, total station, iPad etc.) and GIS applications and software. Previous experience using Collector a plus.
  • Ability to work both independently and with a team.
  • Proactive in recognizing and appropriately addressing health and safety issues for entire team
  • A California driver's license is required.
  • Must have a satisfactory driving record and complete a background check.
  • Candidates who reside in the San Francisco Bay Area are preferred.
  • Potential for the need for the completion for the Hazwhopper OSHA 40-hr certification (previous certification is a plus).
  • May require enrollment in the medical monitoring program requiring initial and annual physicals and initial and random drug screens.
  • Qualified applicants who are offered a position will be required to pass a pre-employment substance abuse test.

The expected salary range for the position is displayed in accordance with the California Pay Transparency Law. Final agreed upon compensation is based upon individual qualifications and experience. Hourly range: $21.08 - $35.11.
