Summary

Summer Camp Nurse
YMCA Camp Sloper, Southington CT
Dates:
  • Session 1 - June 26th - July 7th
  • Session 2 - July 10th - July 21st
  • Session 3 - July 24th - August 4th

Days: Monday - Friday (10 Days per session)
Times: 8:30am-3:30pm
Pay: $22.00 per hour

Duties

Under the direction of the Outdoor Center Director, the Camp Nurse is responsible for basic health care services for campers, staff, and facilities at YMCA Camp Sloper.

Pre-Camp:

Participate in all pre-camp staff training (dates and times to be announced)
Complete the Sloper Staff Payroll File including: application/agreement, all enclosed forms, medical forms and time off policy
Inventory all medical supplies
Order all necessary forms and supplies
Organize camper and staff medicals before the first day of camp
Send letter to all staff and campers with missing medical forms
Meet with Camp Physician to go over standing orders and emergency procedures
Set up first aid stations

Prepare enough first aid kits for all specialty areas at camp


In-Camp:

Treat all injuries and illnesses, and administer medications, etc. (as directed by standing orders and Camp Physician)


Record all treatments and medications administered and maintain health records

Obtain the signature of Camp Physician in health log each week
Lock up all medications when not in use
Maintain an adequate amount of medical supplies
Prepare medical forms for outgoing trips from YMCA Camp Sloper and notify Unit Directors of special needs (allergies, medications, etc.)
Be on call during family nights and overnights for emergencies
Assist in on-going staff training throughout the summer
Record daily attendance and make calls to absent campers
Assist in answering camp phone during camp hours
Assist Camp Director in other administrative jobs (forms, filing, etc.)
Remain at camp until all first aid situations have been handled

Post-camp:

Prepare an inventory of all medical supplies
Pack up and secure medical supplies for off-season
Call parents about left over medications
Participate in evaluation of personal performance and overall camp program

Requirements

Registered Nurse (or equivalent as dictated by State of Connecticut)
Has an understanding of the developmental characteristics of children and teens
Has experience working with children and/or teens
Has the ability to communicate effectively with children, teens, staff members and parents
Enjoys working outdoors and understands the potential hazards of an outdoor setting
Accepts and demonstrates the values of the YMCA (caring, honesty, respect, responsibility)
Flexible, with the ability to adjust to varying
